For Christmas, I received the blu-ray extended edition of LOTR. Having always loved the movies, I was extremely excited and immediately set out to watch them all again. They are even better than I remember, and when I think about a complete movie experience their is just nothing that compares to LOTR for me. I have watched the trilogy twice since, and they get better everytime I watch them. I have realized that it is impossible for me grow tired of these movies.

When I think about the future of cinema, I feel like I've already been to the top of the mountain and nothing will ever surpass or even equal it. I want to believe that one day something will come along that gives me the same feeling, but I just don't see it happening. Discuss.

Individually many movies have surpassed them. But as a whole there they create one amazing movie.

I doubt it. Unfortunately, the days of the MEGA blockbuster movie is dying. Hell, most movies today don't even have big names actors in them anymore. Today we are in the era of the quick-buck Hollywood.

No, there will not be. /thread Seriously though, I don't see it happening in our lifetime. The LOTR trilogy, when looked at as one movie broken into three parts, is near perfect. I can't see any setting or story captivating me and making me feel the emotions that LOTR did any time soon.

Yeah it is just you.

There's a difference of preference when it comes to lore, but on the things that we actually can compare (acting, plot consistency, etc) Star Wars films are just not good on multiple faucets by comparison. I mean I absolutely loved Empire Strikes Back but I'm not going to let my love of something blind me from recognizing it's flaws.

I do give SW the egde though, LOTR had great source material to work from.

Also, its a great Trilogy to get drunk to. Me and a couple friends played a LoTR drinking game, there were so many rules that we were drunk by the time you first see the Shire. Surprisingly though, we made it through all 3 movies. Great night.

Even if i just look at the original three Star Wars I still disagree. The last movie was good not great and for that reason it is just one step below LOTR for me. Then episode I and II came out and ruined the magic forever. I can't unwatch the movies.

(I'm not comparing Transformers to LOTR, btw. Those movies aren't even in LOTR's league)

Yeah, I agree, ROTJ is what holds Star Wars back from being the greatest trilogy of all time. A fantastic movie and Luke's final showdown with Vader and the Emperor are one of my favorite scenes of all time, but ****ing ewoks decimating the imperial army?!?! Worst idea ever. Also Boba Fett's death was a total letdown.

I said dying, not completely dead...and while those are major blockbuster movies, the likes of LOTRs and Star Wars are just a completely different stratosphere. When those two series were in theaters, it was just a whole different ball game. It was an event. Waiting in a line for those was like waiting for a new ride at Disneyland.

I'd argue that The Dark Knight had a similar level of hype.

The good thing about the lord of the rings is that If you watch them non stop, meaning not switching disks without pausing it, it feels as if you were watching one whole movie. I did that once, good stuff....butt hurt like hell when I finished

I ripped all the extended editions into one long .mkv file. I just have to skip through the credits.

probably not. American cinema in general is dying. Although the Hobbit gives me hope since Jackson brought together everyone from the concept artists to the composers. I also trust Jackson, hes never failed before.

Well its ripped straight from the blu-ray with no additional compression using MakeMKV, and I can't tell the difference from the disk. The file is over 150GB.

I agree that The Dark Knight had a similar level of hype and I LOVE the movie (have the blu-ray for it also). But comparing the movies themselves, I find LOTR superior.

alot of people didn't like it but I enjoyed Tron: Legacy and was hoping that it would've blown up bigger than it did.

Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite movie series and would love to see 2 more made.

Nolan's Batman trilogy is going to have an epic ending, so there's that.

Chronicles of Riddick third movie is currently in production and I dig the mythology - so hope that turns out good.

Terminator 5 is going to be Rated R, another good look for the sci-fi fans.

Never was a Superman fan, but I know alot of people are going to see Man of Steel.

There's the Avengers, Iron Man 3, Amazing Spider-Man, and Nick Fury coming from Marvel down the line.

Couple movies to look forward to but nothing on the scale of Lord of the Rings, and you can't count The Hobbit since it's part of the series.

When i left the theater when i first saw The Return Of The King i was really sad cause i knew i wouldn't ever exprience something like that ever again. There are better movies and there will probably be many others, but i doubt ill ever feel that way again. One of the reasons is that i'm no longer a kid and so it's really hard to get that kind of immersion on movies, games and most stuff like i used to. We shouldn't ever lose that passion, innocence, as we grow up. Life becomes harder to enjoy.

I could argue Avatar for viewing experience alone. I'm not going near story/characters :P, but if you had to make a category just for movies that make you feel like a kid again, that's where I'd put Avatar. I was immersed the whole time I was watching.
