Perhaps the Hobbit?

Honestly I feel that there are several movies that are just as good as LOTR's, but they are very different experiences. For instance I think Shawshank Redemption is just as powerful of a movie as LOTR's, but it satisfies viewers in a very different way. Its different, but just as necessary.

I watched Shawshank Redemption at school last year. Most people ridiculed it but I freakin loved it. It was such a beutiful film. Easily one of my top films along with Mystic River, which I watched with my dad recently.

I find that when people are forced into watching or reading something at school it gets a lot of hatred.

Personally I hated the book Fahrenheit 451, and it largely has to do with the fact that I was forced to not only read it, but go to a class where I had to hear the teacher gush about how great the book is and how it surpasses nearly everything else I have ever read because of symbolism.

My thought was, "Yeah bullsh!t. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Narnia were all better than this crap. Heck even the fvcking animorphs beat this."

Nah I just thinks most kids of my generation don't like films of such high quality.

Most of them prefered Avatar which made me quite sad.

The thing is with LOTR that there isnt a bad part in all 3 of the movies, whereas with Star Wars, Return of the Jedi had its low moments.

Star Wars.

IS the definition of the movie experience.

OB-47
It's really not. Not even at its best (ESB) I have no qualms with the LOTR trilogy, but you're asking if there's going to be another movie experience like it when the trilogy itself isn't as great of a movie experience as the likes of Lawrence of Arabia, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, or Seven Samurai.

Shawshank Redemption may be my favorite movie of all time, I prefer it individually over any 3 of the LOTR movies. However, as a whole, the LOTR trilogy has something that just a single movie can never have.

I still prefer any of the LOTR movies over those, by far, nothing exceptional about any of them, although I haven't seen the ones bolded.

IMO the Star Wars saga is still the best movie experience. LOTR is a very close second, hopefully The Hobbit is just as good if not better.

It seems alot of people are missing the point of this thread. Comparing a single movie with a trilogy isn't a 1:1 relation. This thread isn't asking if any SINGLE movie is better than the LOTR trilogy. Having three movies with consistently amazing quality is MUCH harder than just having one. As I said before I prefer many movies over the individual LOTR movies.

The Godfather would be better if it weren't for the 3rd. Very disappointing.

I thought Harry Potter was a much more enthralling experience. It was also significantly longer and rewarding.

I like Harry Potter alot too and the last two movies were very good. However the quality throughout the series was inconsistent and I think that the movies would have benefited if they had kept the same director throughout.

What do you mean by that? It was supposed to be a discussion about having another movie experience in the future that will equal or surpass LOTR. It turned into people saying which movies they like better than LOTR.

I had a topic about this about a month ago. The LOTR series is the greatest epic movie franchise ever. I feel like no other movie franchise comes close to it besides the original Star Wars Trilogy. I am looking forward to The Hobbit tremendously though. I can't wait to get back into the LOTR universe. :D

I feel the same way but hope I'm wrong! One day I want my children to be able to experience the same thing I did growing up.

Although I don't agree with all of those, off the top of my head, here's around 20 more that I think are all better than ROTK:

Pans Labyrinth
City of God
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Lost in Translation
Before Sunrise
The Dark Knight
Inception
Downfall
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Zodiac
Grizzly Man
Inglourious Basterds
The Secret in their Eyes
The Hurt Locker
Memories of Murder
Wall-E
Toy Story 3
Children of Men
Incendies
The Social Network

And 5 more better than ROTK just in 2011:

The Tree of Life
A Separation
Hugo
Drive
The Artist

The only one I would say is on par with ROTK out of those is No Country. However, this isn't really a ROTK comparison thread.

The Harry Potter movies had some high points (and The Deathly Hallows movies were very good), but to me, the overall experience was very uneven, certain exclusions from the books were sort of baffling, and as the movies progressed and the main actors' accents got thicker, large chunks of the movies' dialogue suddenly became incomprehensible (which, given the international appeal of the series, was a serious oversight).
