Lot of Nirvana hate in here.....LJS9502_basic
I don't hate them. I just really dislike their music. Which is weird because my favorite band has grunge hits, and my all time favorite song is a grunge song.

Like with most bands I can find some songs I like....but they are not a favorite band of mine. Bush is your favorite band?:PLot of Nirvana hate in here.....LJS9502_basicWell there may be an impression that its cool to hate them or whetever, but I have actually tried to listen to each and every one of their songs. Literally. I have heard all of their songs from every album. The appeal was zero to me.
The only song that I really liked was "Come As You Are" (which I think its not a song Nirvana made; they just covered it).
When to someone theres no appeal to what they are listening to and hear about how people go WOW (generally) for Nirvana and how they speak about how influential they were and how their music was "the best" or whatever, it does give the feeling of being overrated (I wont claim "objectively").

I heard the same song (same lyrics, same melody, different instruments) on some song compilation. It was sung by a woman and the song felt "old" and thats how I assumed it was this the original track and Nirvana covered it."More than that": well I think its very common where there is a lot of praise there is also a lot of "hate" (hate in quotes of course). Its a reaction really.
And talking for myself as well. I mean I first heard the songs and I was like: "So these are the songs, everyone is going nuts about and everyone wearing the Nirvana T-shirts and whatnot? What the hell?!" Its a shock, I suppose. Like a negative surprise that you feel like expressing, sometimes looking like hate. But I dont think its hate.

Well when grunge first came out it was Nirvana that was the face of the new movement as far as mainstream went. And it did kill glam metal for which I think we should be grateful.[Really? I understand that you were underwhelmed by the band. Then too sometimes the time and place creates more importance than due. Do you think The Beatles would be as big today as they were in the 60's for instance?
Another terrible grunge band? Hopefully not.aaronmullanA terrible grunge band beats the best of the post grunge bands.:P

That is a good point...
I do believe another band somewhere down the road will come along and change up the music scene again, so yeah, I think so
And Nirvana weren't as bad as some people in this thread are making out - there were bands before them doing the same thing and better, but Cobain was a talented songwriter in his own right
I don't even get why people consider Nirvana to be so "great." They just mostly ripped off Mudhoney. And only Dave Grohl was a talented musician.
No love for Pearl Jam? Not many Brit Pop bands come close to Black....In terms of influence and what they did for the industry there hasnt been another band like them in a while. I still dont like them much though, I much prefered the Brit Pop scene of the 90s rather than Grunge. Much better bands to me.

I like Pearl Jam a lot, but I was more of a Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains fan. I think I prefer the 60s influence that Brit Pop has, though I was never a big fan of Oasis. I prefer bands like Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, James, Suede, The Charlatans UK, Prefab Sprout, and Belle and Sebastian. Though I am not sure if some of those bands count as Brit pop. I also love the Prog Revival, and Shoegaze bands of the 90s like Slowdive, Pale Saints, Boo Radleys, Swervedriver, Cocteau Twins, Catherine Wheel, and Jesus and Mary Chain. I think you were the one who kinda got me into shoegaze music, so cheers good sir:P Back on topic though, do you think Nirvana were in the right place at the right time in terms of when they started making music?
I listen to well evey band you listed as well. I definitely think Nirvana was in the right place at the right time. Most bands that explode the mainstream have that lucky coincidence that propels them farther into the public eye would they had the time not been right. Glam metal was wearing thin and people were ready for something more. Nirvana fit that criteria. And while they are not my favorite grunge band they are not a bad band. Just got too much press and then the inevitable backlash.....I like Pearl Jam a lot, but I was more of a Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains fan. Oh yeah they were a talented band, I'm not going to dismiss them. I think a lot of people can fall for hype and be dissapointed by a band. I try and have no expectations, that way I can be more open to new music. I don't love Nirvana, but I can appreciate their influence and I enjoy some of their songs.
In the class of Bach? Really? Last I checked, Bach wasn't some mediocre musician with an irritating voice who was surpassed in every way possible by his drummer.
An 8 page thread just so you had an excuse to post that stupid video on youtube :| thats actually pretty funny, sums up off topic to me anyway.

Such a lie, Kurt Cobain kicked ass and had a lot of artistic natural talent. They were influenced by other bands, yes, but weren't "ripping off." Nirvana is way better than Mudhoney.

Didn't cobain say he pretty much ripped off the Pixies? :P The intro riff to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is right from Boston's "More than a feeling" too, but that's cool. It's ok to "rip off" ideas/riffs/etc. from other musicians, so long as you give credit. Cobain gave credit to some(not all), so that's decent in my book. Cobain was a mediocre guitarist, had a mediocre voice that fit the sound he was after, and he had a good ear for hooks. Nirvana's music was grunge, but more accessible due to their sound being more pop-oriented than other grunge bands. All in all they were a mediocre band IMO, but that's not saying they were devoid of talent. Most bands have talent, and Nirvana had a fair bit as well.To answer your question: maybe. For all of you people calling Nirvana overrated, I bet you've only listened to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or their second album - "Nevermind." If that's the case, then you really have no say.Hopkins_JNope. I have actually listened to every single of their songs.

He had a knack for doing crazy stuff with popular things and mixing them up and making them strange.
However, know that all musicians are influences by someone or something, so to say "they just got their ideas from X musician" is redundant because all musicians, artists, etc have inspirations and idols. Kurt Cobain did when he was a kid, and now some people view Kurt Cobain as an inspiration. That's the process of it.
Yeah, Nirvana isn't technically good, as far as technical performance goes, but to me, the art and power presented is more important than just technical prowess. To me, those who hype technical prowess too much miss out on the beauty.
Also, people will just go and say that Nirvana and Kurt Cobain is overrated just because they are in the news a lot and are sick of hearing it. They just want to go against the grain. Yeah, they may not like them, but the hate for the band is quite unjustified, I mean, Nirvana is enjoyable to listen to.
Yeah. I take alot of bands over them now. They were great back then though along with other Grunge bands

I agree. I saw them both in 1992 and yes although there are parallels between them in their garage/lo-fi sound Seattle sound, to suggest Nirvana 'ripped off' Mudhoney would be a little extreme

Bottom line, their music is good and enjoyable to listen to, whether there are "parallels" or not. Saying that someone influenced someone else is not a bad thing. Influences are completely necessary for art and music, and unless the person lives alone on Mars or something, is quite unlikely that it never happens.
I agree with you by the way, I know it sounds like I'm preaching to you, sorry.
