At the end of a competitive activity, if your score is higher than your opponent's.

btstlouis

The goal of competitive activities is to win. So in that context....sure.

EDIT: At the end of an activity where there can be a winner or loser, your score is higher than your opponents.

Then it is ambiguous. It depends on the person's reasons for partaking in the activity.

What if you were competing in a 'who can be the least competitive' contest?

[QUOTE="_en1gma_"]Define "winning".Drakes_Fortune

At the end of a competitive activity, if your score is higher than your opponent's.

Then your talking about winning a game here. Not winning at everything. That not what i talked about in my posts, in case you actually read them, wich i still think you should do it.

Sorry I read it just didn't get the chance to respond. I found your second post to be closer to my ideology, especially when you talked about disliking it when guys said they just wanted to 'play for fun'.

i dunno. just winning isnt enough incentive for me. like if i'm racing a complete stranger (in my car or in a game) I dont like to lose. but if it's a good friend or my brothers I wont be so competitive. I have mercy for people I like, but not people i dont know or dont like. does that make sense? sometimes I'm not caught up in being competitive and sometimes I just can see that i wont win, so i have fun instead.

Idk, you got me there, haha. Sounds like a worthless contest though.

I think that trying to win is very important, although good sportsmanship is just as important. If you're not a good sportsman then it just makes you look bad.

Eh. I've never subscribed to that line of thought. Winning isn't everything, I can have fun and enjoy myself even if I lose, so long as I know I gave it my all. I work hard at games I like. Sometimes, giving it all means doing my best to win a game of CoD with rocket and pistol kills alone. :P So long as I'm doing my best I'm usually happy.

Hmm, winning isn't everything because losing is also very important, in fact it might be even more important than winning.

Many of the people who take the route of 'playing for fun' just do it because of their lack of skill in a particular activity and do not want to embarrass themselves. I have never been this way, I always try my hardest whether I am good at the activity or not.btstlouis

I always try my best at anything, be it sports or games or whatever. For me, I'm a fail at basketball. I mean, I've shot on my own net and you can't get much more embarrassing than that but I still try since winning does feel pretty sweet. However, in that kind of situation, I play for fun.

Now I'm not saying that it's impossible to play a game just for fun, but at its root, it should be about winning.btstlouis

If I'm playing a game/sport with my friends and I'm solely focused on winning, I'm not generally not having fun. I think winning should be a nice bonus for playing at your best. A win without fun is like a loss.

No, winning isn't everything. There's also losing.

Winning is certainly the goal, though (you don't play specifically to lose), so it's certainly the better part.

My philosophy on any sort of competitive activity (including video games) is that winning is everything. Part of this comes from my natural desire to want to win, and part of it is how absolutely sick I am of people saying winning is not important. Many of the people who take the route of 'playing for fun' just do it because of their lack of skill in a particular activity and do not want to embarrass themselves.

btstlouis

I completely disagree with you on this. I'm very good at some video-games and have even participated in competitions, and even won a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament once. If I had lost it, I wouldn't have sweated it whatsoever. I don't care if I win, I play for fun because I do it to relax or blow off frustration. Playing for Relaxation or Professionally are completely seperate things.

I'm pretty damned good at First Person Shooters, and it's always been about fun for me.

I've got friends who absolutely freak out when they die, but that's never been the case for me.

Winning is fun but, you can't always compete too hard... being competitive can make you a rude person, if you are SERIOUSLY competitive IMO.
