Summary: A woman with a history of kidney stones goes into a hospital with symptoms of having a kidney stone, and gets all 4 of her limbs amputated. She sued the hospital, but lost the case. The judge is calling for a new trial.

Wow.

:| Wow, talk about a mixup. That's why you always make sure they have the right file when they are carting you off to the surgery room.

I hope they lose their licenses. Psycho hospital, huh. I would become a Cyborg, fit a machine gun in my right arm, fit a chainsaw in my left, and have metal claws that could transform from gun and saw to hands or claws, and also probably the ability to sprout hundreds of tentacles brimming with energy from my back. Than i raze the hospital to the ground for what they did to my arms and legs, but then again, who wouldn't?

I wouldn't mind if they cut off my arms so long as they paid for those things.

Psycho hospital, huh.I would replace my arms with cyber limbs with metal claws at the ends, the right claw of which could transform into a machine guns, and the left a chainsaw, and then i would replace my legs with mechanical appendages with jets on the end, and also probably install a device which would let me sprout hundreds of tentacles brimming with energy from my back. Sorry, had to fix the errors, that was written rather quickly, and that really is a shame that that happened to her, wonder why she lost the case.

The title make it seem like more of a mixup than it was. She was only misdiagnosed to having acute cholecystitis instead of a kidney stone, TBH she should have gone into hospital as soon as parts of her body started turning black, as her limbs had already died by the time she went back amputation was the only solution.

yup.. doctors miscommunicated the fact that she had kidney stones so they performed surgery for something else and didn't remove the stones.. she got all infected and it destroyed her limbs which needed to be removed.

I'm not sure what to think about this. A jury already ruled against her... and then the judge says "screw the jury; their decision was wrong and I want a new trial". That just doesn't feel right.

I wish mopre people woudl read the article instead of just basing their posts off the title. She didn't go in for kidney stone removal and they immediately cut off her limbs. What happened was she went in for kidney stone removal, it was diagnosed as soemthign else, after she was released the flow of blood stopped to he rlimbs so she basically got frostbite and she had to go in and get her limbs amputated due to that. IT was a misdiagnosed thing not the horrible accident you're all making it out to be.

Yeah, it's not like she walked into the hospital perfectly fine and had her limbs removed. The doctors just failed to do anything to treat her until they amputated her limbs. Which is negligence not a mix up really.

At first it sounds like she went in for her kidney stone and instead of taking care of that they cut off her arms and legs, but that's not actually what happened. She went it with a kidney stone and it was misdiagnosed and left untreated, which resulted in an infection which made the amputations necessary. They didn't remove her limbs for no reason.

There are processes for appeals, yes? What's the point of a trial by jury if the jury's decision can be casually tossed out?

Disturbing, but I'm more bothered by the judge's decision to negate the jury's verdict.... Why bother using a jury if you're just going to throw their opinions away? Why does he feel he knows more as a single person than they as a collective group do?

I do believe that Judges have always had that power if they deem the Juries decision as absurd but they don't exercise that power often.

You obviously didn't read it carefully enough, she was misdiagnosed and her limbs died due to her illness. The rest of her would have died due to the toxins produced by the dead limbs if they weren't amputated.

This case sounds like an episode of House.

  • patient goes in
  • diagnosis made
  • patient's state worsens
  • realize they made wrong diagnosis
  • make correct diagnosis AND deal with patient's worsened state

I'm guessing this happened at Memorial? I know the ER physician in this case. I've worked with her. She's not negligent or incompetent.

This sounds more like a screw up on the internist's part. It sounds like he didn't listen to her or understand the urgency of the case and made a misdiagnosis.

Word. Hate to be the jerk here, but I kind of agree with a jury. If you're losing feeling in your limbs for a straight month, GO TO THE DOCTOR. Then she'd probably still have limbs...
