This woman's head was severed from her body,...and SHE LIVED!!!Yikes!!!

A FALL from a horse left a woman with such a severely broken neck she was forced to pick up her own head.

Thea Maxfield, who runs a stud farm in Oxfordshire, England, suffered a "hangman's break" a clean break of the upper cervical vertebra when she fell from her dressage horse.

She tried to get out of the animal's way as it galloped around after the fall, but when she tried to pick herself up, the horrified 26-year-old found her head stayed where it was.

Realising she had to move to avoid being stomped on, Ms Maxfield cupped her hands around her own head and lifted it into place to avoid damaging her spinal cord.

"As soon as I came off the horse I knew something was wrong. I went to get up but my head stayed on the floor,'' she told the Daily Express.

.End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"I couldn't move my neck or my head and I had to literally pick my head up and carry it in my hands."

After managing to stagger to safety, Maxfield, watched by her frightened mother Diane, 66, was taken to hospital.

Doctors initially warned she may be permanently paralysed.

But incredibly after using a revolutionary fixed brace connected to a computer by tiny sensors for three months to help fuse the bones back together, she is now back riding seven months after the accident

well not severed from the body, but from the SPINAL CORD!!! :o

I am guessing she had to wear a halo for some time?

Those things, while wonderful inventions that help people live their life, are some of the most depressing things ever.

I have had to take care of someone with a halo at my nursing home. They look ucomfortable 24/7....

BTW couple things about that article:

1) She is 26 but her mom is 66? Her mom must be super-women for pumping out a kid at 40.

2) Why in God's name would she even go near a horse after that? I would hate the damn creatures after going through that. Probably would end up working at a glue factory out of spite!:P

Female fertility starts to decline at 35, but certainly doesn't just go away completely for most women. Having children into their 40s is not that uncommon. Regarding the daughter riding again, that just shows that she's strong of character. Unironically, the expression "getting back on the horse" is often used to refer to someone taking up a difficult activity again after spectacular injury or failure.

On a side note, is the daughter's name Laura Kinney? :)

That's not that unusual really. Lots of women have children in their 40's. My wife, for example, was born when her mother was 43.

I don't know how to feel about her getting back into riding after having to pick up her own damned head, narrowly escaping a wheelchair or worse for the rest of her life... she's either incredibly passionate or incredibly stupid. Or both.

What do you mean female fertility starts to decline at 35? It starts to decline from puberty, as a girl has all her eggs from then and starts losing them.

IronBeaver

The way i imagine that is, when she was on the floor, she tried to stand up and run, but her head didn't went with the rest of her body, since the neck was completely broken, so she have to grab her head and then run, think about your arm, if you broke your elbow entirely, you won't have a way to move it or even raising it.

Almost forgot, this give me the chills, i mean, YIKES.

LostProphetFLCL

It's hard to have your first kid above 35 but if you keep the wheels greased so to speak it's much easier. Each birth usually takes less time then the previous one because the body has a better reaction to when a torrent of oxytocin starts going through the blood
