I'd go with Buchanan. The Dred Scott decision was passed while Buchanan was in office and he did little to prevent it as he considered the slavery issue of "little practical importance." A recession hit in 1857, while he was in office. Seven slave states seceded while Buchana was in office and he lost all forts in tohse states but one, furthermore 1/4th of all American soldiers surrendedered to Texas troops.

Anyone else agree or is there somebody else in mind?

Ulysses S. Grant.

Besides accomplishing almost nothing as president, his time in office was racked with scandel and ineffectiveness.

George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Andrew Jackson(for his mercilless butchery of Native Americans) also deserve mention.

Jimmy Carter. Double-digit inflation, a botched hostage rescue attempt, and a desperate try to buy military votes during his reelection bid.

Toss-up between Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan. Both terribly repulsive; one skilled and the other incompetent. Not really sure which is worse. :P

Our modern presidents, for all that people love screaming about "war crimes" and "treason", have nothing on these guys.

not to mention the fact that he brought down the shah of iran and helped bring khomeni in. iranians will always hate him, its carter's fault that we have the islamic leadership in iran right now, and are teetering on the brink of nuclear war / having to go to war with iran. carter is definately one of the worst in my book.

Reagan was nowhere near as bad as other presidents. His policy of outspending the Communists(I am aware that the USSR was already in the decline) was a major victory.

Also, I am glad that Nixon has not been mentioned. Nixon was actually a pretty good president, establishing trade with China, helping relax the Cold War and establishing the EPA among his greater accomplishments.

Whether or not Obama lies, I think we can at least agree that he is not responsible for nor influential in the basically willful murder of thousands of people, nor did he do absolutely nothing to stop a civil war and somehow succeeded in pissing off both sides.

I think the way someone does things is more important then what they do. That being said people tend to forget that Lincoln took away right of people who were against him in order to accomplish what he thought was right. Even though what he was trying to accomplish was morally right the way he did it wasn't ethical

Yeah, He wasn't as great as people think. Lets a war start on his own soil (North vs. South).

I can't say Obama yet because he's not done. So, I'll go with Lyndon B. Johnson, for Screwing up Vietnam, thousands of lives lost for Nothing. HE was a pig too, look him up.

Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were garbage as well.

Nixon was so underrated his own hand picked attorney generals resigned rather than follow his orders. Great guy.

Lets a war start? James Buchanan was the one who basically let it start. Seven states had already seceded before Lincoln even took office, and hostilities began only a little over a month after Lincoln took office. The Confederates were the ones who made the first attack on an American military fort, and it was Lincoln taking retaliatory action as a result that really lit the fire of the civil war. To blame the Civil War on Lincoln seems kind of odd.

He could have done something to stop it from coming about.

"The American Civil War (1861–65) began because leaders of Southern states were unhappy with the outcome of the 1860 presidential election, which was won by Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). Fearful of losing their economic system, which was based on agriculture and dependent on slave labor, the Southern states began to act on their promise to secede (withdraw) from the United States (called the Union) and form their own nation. South Carolina was the first to secede, in December 1860".

You mean like every other president failed to do? From the inception of the union the issue of slavery was identified as a serious problem for the country to handle. Nobody managed to solve it. The least opportunity would be at the end when tensions were at their highest...

Well, many historians cite Grant and Harding as the worst presidents (Harding was only nominated because he "looked like" a president), but I disagree simply because they were big drinkers. :P Buchannan was definitely pretty bad and is a strong contender for the position. Of somewhat modern presidents, though, Carter is easily the worst. In fact, I'd argue Carter is the worst not only for what he did as president, but what he did AFTER the presidency. It was common courtesy for a retired president to not publicly criticize the current president or interfere with the affairs of the country. Carter still seems to think he's the president and that he alone can make the world right, so he goes abroad and gives aid and sympathy to one side in a conflict even when the current president is actively involved in trying to negotiate an agreement.

No it wasn't. John Quincy Adams served in Congress and Taft was on the Supreme Court. Carter has done some very useful humanitarian things. And if that means with disagreeing with an administration that should be doing it themselves, then so be it. He still has a role to play as a former President, beyond attending funerals of foreign leaders.

He still has a role to play as a former President, beyond attending funerals of foreign leaders.

Fantastic work. You really know how to knock down a strawman. I said no other former president has ever actively undermined the current president when it comes to foreign issues. You point out that two previous presidents had some other public service job post-presidency as a "rebuttal." Sorry, neither Taft nor JQA undermined the presidents of their time in international affairs. The only one to do that is Jimmy Carter. And before you find a former president that has had some role in international affairs post-presidency, there's a difference between having a role and undermining the current administration. George W. Bush appointed his father and Bill Clinton to represent the US after the devastating tsunami in Indonesia. But notice how they only did it AFTER the current president asked. That's the way it was always done....only Jimmy Carter thinks he's better than that.
