Call me shallow but I stopped seeing this one guy because he listened to Avril Lavigne religiously. I usually respect people's tastes in music but the degree to which he indulged in it disturbed me (more like turned me off). Also, I wouldn't be able to stay with a person who listens to rap, gangsterand hip-hop all the time, it would drive me insane. I tend to be open-minded about these things but there are certain typs of music I can't tolerate.. (polka and techno music 24/7 anyone?)

Anyway, would a person's musical tastes stop you from dating them?

I believe a person's musical taste reflects their personality, so if your ex listened to Avril Lavigne, then I guess you were right to ditch him.

It depends.I listen to nothing but alternative rock, 70% older rock and some newer stuff, now I can understand if someone likes rap or country but something I can't deal with is death metal, emo/gothic, britney spears type crap and so on.

Yes. Playing and listening to music is a large part of my life and I need to date somebody who respects that and hopefully has the same tastes.

No, I don't. Like I said, to some degree I can deal, but over indulgeness to certain types turns me away.

Although I can imagine exceptions, generally speaking I would refrain from dating anybody with music I considered to be horrific. To tell you the truth that's usually the first thing I check when I go to a person's house - check the music collection and look to see what books are on the shelves.

As long as it's not mostly stuff that's extremely and annoying and ******. And if it's something bad but something I can stand and they force me to listen to it then I have no choice but to play some death and black metal8)

No. I would never find a chick that listens to death or black metal. All the girls I hang out with listen to the normal rap, pop, and rock. I'm fine with it.

Depends if the musical taste influences their personality. So if listening to Gangster Rap made that person go around with a cap on sideways and speak like an idiot, then yes it can be okay. But if it is just simply liking the music and listening to it then I would still date that person if they were nice enough.

Possible. Similar interests are usually a good way to connect and relate, good foundations for any relationship. However, an obsession with one genre or artist to the point that no respect is given to other genres or artists, ec etc isn't healthy.

However, I wouldn't really dump someone over something as trivial as musical taste. I understand it's part of general peronality to a person, but can they be consider3ed as character flaws? Or major determing factors that would influence an end to the relationship?

Yeah, I ended a relationship because the girl said something along the lines of "I wonder what it would be like to slit your throat while ou sleep. You just seem so peaceful and content, I kind of want to ruin that."

Ish like that deters me.

That seems kind of shallow. Just the idea in general. I guess they were obsessed with it or if they put down other music it would turn me off of them. You cant just stop dating someone if you find out they listen to backstreet boys, that truly is shallow. People have different tastes.

I wouldn't stop dating someone I like beacause of their musical tastes since I could be able to find something different that i like but if i didn't like them that much that would be a good excuse. It would also be a lot easier to just ask them to listen to what u like every once in while

If my boyfriend love crap girl/boy pop bands and listen to them all the time, I would probably have to dump him.

If this person is someone I truly connected with, then I don't see why such silly nit-pickery would matter. I could always turn her onto the music I enjoy, or vice versa. As much of a music nerd as I am, caring about something like that in a relationship doesn't bode well when you two disagree on a topic which actually matters.

Thankfully my spouse has very similar taste to my own, just much less interest in Metal.

If the girl is hott enough it does not matter, even if its that horrible regeton music, oh man i hate that music, its the same beat over and over and over agian every song. But if i had a hott girl who heard crap music and a less hott girl who hears metal id have to chose the less hot metal girl.

Cool topic, hobbez. I tend to be the same way. It depends on the type of music and the degree of infatuation for me to truely break it off. Luckily, I have a pretty broad taste in music so I can stand almost anything. However, if she was only into boy bands and the brainless type of rap, I might have to move along.

I don't think it would stop me (in fact i know for the most part it has no effect, i know very few people that share my taste in music, most people i have dated have never even heard of a lot of the stuff i listen to). But it depends how the person is. I don't like people who are closed off to certain music, people who say stuff like " sucks! only metal/rap/rock/country/[any other genre] is good!" drive me crazy. There are very few genres where i can not find something i enjoy (obviously i have my favorites, but i am open to almost anything). I think people need to be open to new things, and someone who is not willing to try new music is very likely a very closed mind individual.
