Do you beleive that a system of direct democracy could work in a modern day society?

Direct democracy is a system of democracy that allows the citizens of a country to make legislative decisions on their own, without the use of elected representatives.

I believe, through the use of the internet and in a society with high levels political discourse, direct democracy could work.

It might work in concentrated areas like in the Occupy protests, but even then there's crime and disorder going about. It would be a disaster in a big country with people that don't all believe in the same thing.

Absolutely not.

Actually, direct democracy has pretty much **** California over. Here's a good article on it:http://www.economist.com/node/18563638

Whenever anybody says that "politicians should do what the people want", I tend to tune out because that is pretty much the same flawed mindset behind direct democracy.

The public is not educated enough on the issues to be shaping public policy and direct democracy's logical, and practical, conclusion is mob rule.

Public policy for any reasonably large sized group of people is too complex for every citizen to be expected to be educated on every issue; for all the problems with representational democracy, direct would be much worse, IMO.

That does seem to be true. Biggest problem with other types of government is that although they prevent dictators from popping up, they get nothing done. Imagine how different the US would be if the President could actually do the stuff he wants to do.

Only at a local level. Too many issues, too much going on for direct democracy for everything.

It would be a disaster. To paraphrase a quote from Men in Black, "A person is smart, people are blind, panicky, and stupid". For example... what if the idea of "Banish all taxes forever" came to the polls?

it would give a lot of power to special interests and may work till the rest of the population finds out they can vote wealth their way, and boom this is where the US is right now. even though the us is a democratic republic, but any system based on voting has this issue, other systems have other problems.

I just wish elected representatives were more accessible to the public, and could do more than just add more to the "in pile" of the bureaucratic machine. On the scale we have these days, it would take too long to get anything done.

I don't think it would of worked 200 years ago but I think that could change in the future. Although i feel like states might start raging. What would be the point in campaigning in Iowa or something. it would make some states not matter at all.

That would only create a whole different kind of tyranny in mobocracy on a nationwide level.

In terms of everyone getting a vote, the Internet makes it highly possible for people to be able to conveniently vote. It is not practical or a good idea though. Most people just aren't educated enough to be making decisions about many of the tough issues and not everybody has the time to read through every proposed law to make a decision anyway.

Yes except that I don't want China voting for our president. No secure computer system has ever been made.

At least it's going to force people to get educated after they burn their country to the ground.

It wouldn't matter, when judges can just overturn "the will of the people."

And that's a good thing.

California is a mess right now partly because of initiatives, and there's no reason that the people should have any say on other people's rights.

I didn't say if it's a good thing or a bad thing (to me, I really couldn't care less). I was answering the question posed by TC.

Very good. And then what will fill the power vacuum when the dictatorship inevitably ends?
