Alright guys heres the deal. My mom decided to leave me and my brother alone for the past couple months. She gave me the food stamp card and her car and left to live with her boyfriend. Now Ihave my own car that is sitting in my parking lot because of an insurance lapse and I can't drive it until July 15. My mom's car that I am currently using is very close to breaking down. I need car to get to work and bring my little brother to school.

I am just wondering how easy would it be for me to get caught if I took the plates/stickers off my moms car and put them on mine. Also if I did get caught what kind of trouble would I be looking at?

Shame on your mom first off. Secondly, cops can easily see if your car is uninsured. Can't speak on what happens when you change plates though.

Surely the plates are regiestered to a specific type of car. So unless you have identical cars it's incrediably risky. I just wouldn't even do it. Not sure if you MUST be insured in the US but here in the UK you do and being caught driving without insurance comes with huge fines upwards of £5000 (I guess just under $10,000) and a massive increase on your own insurance costs and the police can seize the car your driving.

Short story. Don't do it.

First, your mom leaving you and your little brother alone is not good.

Second, getting caught driving an uninsured car is very bad, they will take the car away and give you a pretty big fine, it happened to me.

Third, don't change the plates. Just don't.

Honestly, it's not worth the risk, given your situation of being responsible for your brother.

Changing plates and tags would get you in MUCH more trouble. Getting caught without insurance is pretty much a crap shoot from there. Tell the boyfriend to man up and take of ****

I'm sure his mother didn't suddenly decide one day to up and off, people jumping to conclusions are idiots. He's clearly explaining the situation and the main culprit is the insurance lapse, not the mother "abandoning them". Wow people on here are so judgemental and think they know it all based on one sentence and a question. You'll most likely get caught if for example the two cars are completely different and the cops pick up on it, if the two are the same color and same make and model then you'll probably be fine but i'd still not do it myself, just go buy temporary insurance from one of those "Insurance for 30 days" websites.

I have insurance. The DMV wont let me register the car because I had a insurance lapse before. So I am stuck until July 15 paying for a car that I cant even drive. It's ridiculous how they can do this to someone.

I've known people to just switch tags for a few days and here but I wouldn't recommend it to be a long term solution. Some cops just run plates because they are bored and see if they get hits on anything so if you are the unlucky one then go luck. Probably pull you over, ticket you/fine you and tow the car which is another ticket/fine. It's a lot of cash if you get hit with illegal plates.

Now if your Mom's car is legally plated and insursed why not drive that and anything that might break either fix it or see what the costs would be? Probably a lot cheaper in the long run than driving an illegally plated car.

I think you should call child services if you are under 18.

Yeah the DMV sucks. It's a bureaucratic crap-hole if I ever saw one. It also doesn't help that none of the people who work there even try to pretend to be nice.

It'a amazing how many people get busted for the smallest of reasons. Wrong plates on a car can be a big hit in the wallet. They are treated like stolen tags. Don't risk it.

Don't try it.. nowadays cops have scanners so they can pull up to your car (parked or in motion) and ID it to find out if your insured or not. Try to get your car situated as soon as possible.

How would they even know unless they ran your plates? Your plate number on that registration sticker is too small to read without inspecting it closely, and how many cops just randomly run plate numbers without having first pulled over the person? Maybe a lot do, I could be incredibly wrong. If the sticker is the proper color for that year's registration, then you should be ok unless you get pulled over. However, I still wouldn't recommend doing that. Just drive your mom's car and if it breaks down then figure out what to do then.

Ghost_702

That number on the little sticker that goes up in the corner of the tag is irrelevant. The year of and the color is, but the number isn't. The relevent number is the actual license plate number. XXX-1234 is actually assigned to said car unless the car is sold and the plate can be transfered to the new car (some states do not allow this and the tag goes with the car no matter who owns the vehicle, Georgia used to be like this). When plates are run, XXX-1234 would be what the cops give the dispatcher and it comes back as to what make of car, what year and color even.

In most places, if you are pulled over, the cops ask for your license and registration as well as proof of insurance in more and more places. The registration has the VIN, make, model, year and color listed on it too as well as the license plate number. If things do not jib, it can be assumed that the car or plates are stolen. GTA is a felony though just stolen plates might be a misdemeanor. GTA sends you to jail until you see a judge for bond. Now, even if he is the owner of the vehicle and prove it, he still faces a hefty fine due to a ticket.

Aha getting caught is very unlikely. If you are just doing this for a few months or so you should be fine.
