Would me working at this summer camp be a total rip off?

So I'm a 17 year old high school graduate, and I've been applying to every fast food restaurant, retail store, etc. around my area. Nobody ever calls back. I guess the world is too overpopulated and too many people already have jobs. :P I don't have too much work experience, I put volunteer experience and jobs such as paper delivery in my resume, but if I wanted to get job experience I'd need to have a job first!! Anyway my last resort was working as a counsellor at a summer camp. I've already applied, and orientation starts next week. These are the details of how my work will go on:

-I will be working at this camp from July 4th to August 16th.
-Camp begins at 9:00am and ends at 4:30pm
-Camp goes on from monday to friday, during the time period specified.
-I will get a free school-bus ride to and from the camp, so I don't need to pay for transportation.
-I will be paid at the end of my work period.
-My final payment will be $825.

So I'll be working for about 6 weeks, 5 days a week from 9:00am to 4:30pm, and I will get paid a total of $825. What do you think of this? I think it's a rip off but I guess you have to consider that the camp could be fun for me also and that I get free transportation. :P What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Only $825 for an entire summer wasted? No way would I take that job. If it was a regular paying job, a camp job sounds fun but not at that pay rate.

Sounds good to me. I'm not American though so don't know if $825 is a lot of money. :)

That's like $4/hour isn't it? And you only get paid at the end?

I would take this as a last resort if I was desperate.

Same here but seeing how it's your last resort and how you need the experience badly then I'd say take it....at least it's in a camp and you might have some fun.

Most jobs you have to pay taxes, unless it's "off the books"

I'm 19 now, but even back when I was 17 I'd still make over a 1000 dollars for half that time, or even less. Not worth it I'd say.

The part that sucks the most is once you start you can't quit, or you'll never see that money.

Well the camp said that they're not "with the government" or something so they don't have to pay minimum wage... so I guess not. :P Yes that does sound sketchy but this is a well-known camp.

I am undergoing an internship for six weeks this summer at a trade commission. I am barely getting paid anymore than you. Nobody will pay for the flight to and back and those alone cost more than what I will be earning. Accommodation will need to be accounted for as well. I am 21, at university, and find you complaining rather annoying considering my circumstances this summer compared to yours.

Sorry if I came across as harsh, but seeing you earn nearly as much as me when I have a few years of experience and education on you while working for a fancy diplomatic trade commission and you as a camp counsellor makes my blood boil. You are damn lucky to earn that much at your age. When I was your age, OH ******* BOY, did I earn less.

Can't a man have both? I am so ******* sick of getting a crappy pay just so I can put it in my resume. The only job that didn't really give me a loss was that bank job I had. That was the only one that paid well to boot.

you have no experience, you probably are just as good as any other work in your age group. and you want the employer to call you? no, wait a week. and call and ask if they have ad the time to look over your application. atleast act like you want the job.

also that is a big rip off. i wouldnt every consider working for that pay

Well good luck with it, sucks to hear you're having a hard time. To sum it up: Grocery store and $6,40 an hour. Also got stuff added to my salary people normally get at the end of a working year. Hey, I'll have to go on an internship for 6 months in about 2 years. Depending on where I'll go it could cost me loads. I'll have to start a loan either way.

Right now I'm 19. I converted everything to dollars by the way. I live in Holland, so the salary/cost is probably different here. But for 200 hours of work I'd say it's too low.

Oh and to the comment above, I had no experience too back then, isn't minimum wage a must? (legally)

For the OP, even though that is pretty low pay for the time you'll be working you have to think about all the over qualified people that are willing to take any job right now because of the economy. So you can hold out and hope something better comes along, but unless you have a connection somewhere it's sounds unlikely.

For the guy complaining about his internship, you chose to do that, no one forced you. With that said, some people don't even get paid for their internship while others do. Be happy you are somewhere in the middle and quit crying. Use this opportunity to get your foot in the door at a reputable place and have a job lined up in your field when you do get done with school, unlike the majority of graduates.

That's great. He still is entitled to minimum wage. The job market sucks but everyone is qualified for an entry level minimum wage job.

I chose to do that as there isn't much else. I have to work and gain experience and I would like to do that with a better pay so seeing these guys here earn a hell of a lot better with less experience and education gives me enough of a reason to cry on. I am already searching for an internship that will last a whole year due to my course right after I finish the one this summer. Like I said, what everybody deems a rip off here is pretty dam high pay for me.

[QUOTE="Pirate700"]Even working minimum wage you're making that in around 2 weeks. That camp is paying you WELL bellow minimum wage.

He's a 17 year old high school graduate with no prior work experience, however.

That's great. He still is entitled to minimum wage. The job market sucks but everyone is qualified for an entry level minimum wage job.

Not me apparently. That's pretty great pay for the **** that I've done.

Okay Hexagon, you've made me do the dirty move. Think of all the people in Africa, they work hard, often in the burning son, for 10 cents a day. Below minimum wage, obviously. That's IF they even have one. Be glad I won't post any sad pictures.

Um yeah that kind of work and pay would be illegal here ... it works out to be only $3.6 an hour. If you think your time is work $3.6 an hour, then do it. Otherwise, skip.

EDIT: Of course it depends on the type of work. For example, I have done numerous hours of 'work experience', where I go for a week or so and work at a place to get practical experience. I didn't get paid for it, because it wasn't called a "job" ...

Better than what I had his age. I'd take it, especially since there's nothing else it seems.

Don't shortchange him! It's a respectable $3.60/hr, not $2.50! :P But yeah, I dunno what Hexagon is on about, that's just downright awful. The last time I had a summer job, I was 21 and made $24.50/hr. :P

if youre good at what you do, you get paid well for it. settling for less is your own fault

(if you have enough money to be sitting on gamespot right now im going to assume you dont live in poverty, or are at the least in an economically stable region. just tossing that in before i get the standard ethiopia come back)

Also is that $825 before or after taxes?

DARKCHOAS

I have no idea :P So I have to pay taxes?? It's just a summer camp job :(

Most jobs you have to pay taxes, unless it's "off the books"

I actually think it's$10+ (per hour) that you start to pay taxes. I don't have to and I get payed $8.75 per hourfor an internship. It's a medical credentialling company so I'd assume they'd go by the books. But the reason for my lack of taxes might be my age. I'm 15.

At minimum wage you should be making close to double that.

I've worked at camps, and they only pay you hourly if you're a senior counselor. You're probably going to be a counselor in training.

when i was 17 i started at minimum wage (5.50/hr at the time) and i still had taxes. so they definatly do tax below 10. check the way your internship is paid. last summer i had an internship for 12.50/hr but it wasnt taxed because they treated it as a scholarship. so thats what yours may be doing

Because if it is then that at least makes it a little more worth it.
