In discussing possible names for children I mentioned the name of a video game character to my wife. She is a gamer too and thought the name would be great. I am relatively sure that the rest of our families would think the origin of the name would rule it out altogether. I was wondering what the general consensus among other gamers would be though. Do you think that video games could serve as an area of inspiration for selecting the name of a child or do you think that it is just a hobby and should be left at that? Would you consider naming a child after a video game character? If so, why, and if not, why not?

Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda.

I doubt I would name my daughter Samus.

And we have a lot of Mario out there.

Yeah sure I would. I absoloutely love videogames so I would put it into consideration but honestly no names really stick out for me from the videogame world. Zelda for a girl has already been beaten to death by those Nintendo ads that I wouldn't consider it. I also don't want to just pick a videogame name just for the sake of it. I would have to have some kind of attachment to the series/game ... Alyx from Half Life is interesting but it's not really unique though, so I got nothing.

Euaggelistes

What was the name you proposed?

EDIT: While our two month old is named after yours truly, because of some of the cooing sounds he makes, one of his nicknames at the moment is Yoshi. (Thus the little Yoshi plush toy that will be in his stocking this year).

eeeehhhhhh iunno I can't really think of any names I'd want that are original (so like no Marcus, Nathan, etc) and also don't sound like something you'd get made fun of for having someone here should totally go for King of All Cosmos, though

The only way I would do that is if the name was from a video game, but was like a real name, or at least sounded like one. I defiantly wouldn't name my son Cloud or something.

It would depend on if the name was somewhat normal - though unique. If it was something completely flaky that only a hardcore (probably TOO hardcore) gamer could understand, then no way. You've got to think about the kid going through elementary school and taking a ton of crap from all the other kids. Children are cruel. And what if he/she wants to get a high-paying, responsible job at a professional company. How is the Chief Financial Officer going to look at young Zelda during the interview?

Well Robin Williams's daughter is getting paid for having the name Zelda. But it depends on the name, If it's like Kratos then probably not but if it's Mario, Alan, Nathan, Dominic etc. then sure.

Of course I will. I'll name him Bobby or Terrance or Jack or Dillian or Max or Justin or whatever. If I have a girl her name will be Tiffany, Tina, Lisa, Jackie, Katie, or whatever else I can think of for a name. :)

...oh...wait...the Sims name creation thing won't work for this kind of situation will it? Dang it...:(

If they sound normal like Nathan, Max, Alex etc. sure go ahead but don't name your kid something like Kratos, Scorpion, Darth Vader, Snake or anything like that

I've always liked the name Colette for a girl, and I first became most familiar with that name wile playing Tales of Symphonia, so no, I'm not totally against naming kids after video game characters, just nothing to obvious.

I come from a long line of Luigi's. My uncle, my great grandfather, I'm pretty sure my great great grandfather, hell, my middle name was supposed to be Luigi but it got changed to Louis, of course non of these were inspired by Super Mario.

I'd rank that pretty highly on the "things you don't do to your kids" list. Though maybe some names you could get away with, eg Samus doesn't sound so silly. But you definitely don't want to name your little girl solid snake or something

If I liked the name enough and it had a deeper feeling to it, I may consider it. But it wouldn't be "Dovakiin".

Still gotta be careful though. Worst thing is if your child gets hell in school because of their name... I know I'd never forgive my parents if I was in that situation.
