If I liked the name enough and it had a deeper feeling to it, I may consider it. But it wouldn't be "Dovakiin".GazaAli
Even for a lifetime supply of Bethesda games?

[QUOTE="BranKetra"]Don't be jealous. You know you want to be named Dovakhin.airshocker

I would cry if my parents ever named me from a video game.

Lol I was kidding. That would be a pain in the ass if it were something like Wario.

Really only unless the name has any real basis in this world.

and the only name that comes to mind is "Tali" which is used by Jews and Arabs. Though an extremely rare name, that's where the name comes from. Or perhaps "Altair", again an extremely rare used name in the Arab world.

I would never name my kid say... Kratos, Sheik, or Lightning.

For the record. My sister is named after a dinosaur...

I was a toddler at the time and my folks couldn't decide what name to pick. I said "how about Triceratops?", and according to my folks i was talking about Sarah the Triceratops from Land Before Time movie.

and given that you hear "Sarah" in Tri-Cera-Tops. wala, that's how my little sister's name came to be.

I'd consider giving them a middle name.

Like William Visari Smith or whatever.

^This is one of the reasons I'd be an awful mother btw.

Well, I like the name Gunner for a boy, which I got from the guy who did the voice of Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 2. Not technically named after a game character, but the voice of a character.

It's bad enough the kid'll have the stigma of being related to me, no need to add to his suffering.

No, I don't think I would even consider naming my child after a computer game character. Even if it was a fairly normal-sounding name like Jade or Chris, my reason for picking any of those would not be because of a computer game.

My first name is Pure, so I don't think any video game character name is going to come off as much weirder.

Hella Yeah bro. If you like the name, use it. We need to break away from boring old hum-drum " bob, jim, john, jack, dave, louis" or ... Any other name thats been in use for millions of years.

Matthew like the protagonist from the new Golden Sun games. Too bad I don't have blond hair or blue eyes, so it's impossible for my son to look like Matthew too :(

[QUOTE="Euaggelistes"]

In discussing possible names for children I mentioned the name of a video game character to my wife. She is a gamer too and thought the name would be great. I am relatively sure that the rest of our families would think the origin of the name would rule it out altogether. I was wondering what the general consensus among other gamers would be though. Do you think that video games could serve as an area of inspiration for selecting the name of a child or do you think that it is just a hobby and should be left at that? Would you consider naming a child after a video game character? If so, why, and if not, why not?

Planet_Pluto

What was the name you proposed?

EDIT: While our two month old is named after yours truly, because of some of the cooing sounds he makes, one of his nicknames at the moment is Yoshi. (Thus the little Yoshi plush toy that will be in his stocking this year).

If we have a girl we would consider the name Samus. We have a special relationship with the Metroid series and think the name sounds unique without being too far out there.

And we homeschool our children so no need to worry about getting picked on in school.

I've always liked the name Colette for a girl, and I first became most familiar with that name wile playing Tales of Symphonia, so no, I'm not totally against naming kids after video game characters, just nothing to obvious.

It would have to be subtle and not immediately obvious but the chances are it will happen. I'd name the kid whatever the hell I wanted but I'd rather them not hate me.
