I just worked for the LONGEST time on my first ever "actual" meal -- lasagna! It was glorious.

I don't consider myself a very good cook though (yet); I have a feeling this was a fluke.

How about you? Would you consider yourself a good cook? Or just average? Or really awful?

Take my friend, for example. Breakfast at his house means burnt cornflakes and potatoes that are mashed before they are boiled. I would consider him a... bad cook. A very bad cook.

My father, on the other hand, spends twelve hours before Christmas cooking a glorious feast, and takes pride in being able to make some of the best stew in the county.

Yeah, for the most part. You know you're there when you can read through a recipe and imagine what it tastes like, as well as what things in there are wrong or need adjustment just off the top of your head.

I'm a good lazy cook. I don't mind cooking......and I can make things turn out pretty well......unless it's something that requires actual skill like sushi. But the thing is, I hate preparation. I just want to cook the food, not spend half a damn hour getting everything ready :P

You would be surprised. And being a "good" cook involves more than just an ability to follow a recipe. But yes, I am a great cook. Its in my blood.

So please explain to me how. I can go to any website and follow a recipe to the bone and still make a delicious meal despite me not having much experience in the kitchen.

i would consider a good cook being someone who can cook a good meal without the use of a recipe...anyways i am good at the food i know how to make but i definitely dont have much of a variety going on

I've been cooking since I was around 11. Took me a little while to really enjoy eating what I made. A lot of it though is trial and error.

I'd say I'm better then average. I haven't been preparing many meals lately though and opting for easy stuff instead...

Decent, yes. Good, ehhh, that's debatable. I can make a few formal dishes, but it's nothing overly fancy. Besides, most of my cooking caters to my own tastes, so the vast majority of people wouldn't like it.

Yeah I'm a good cook. Not doing fancy meals, but I can throw down. My wife and friends always tell me I have the skill of throwing things together that sound strange but taste great. Plus I always cook large meals, cause my thought is I'd rather people have to much to eat instead of not enough.

You being able to follow a recipe still makes you a good cook. I have a couple friends who follow a recipe and yet still can't cook worth s***. Somehow they mess it up, and I have no idea why or how. Some people can do it, others can't. Some can learn, others have a natural inclination towards it, others still should avoid it at all costs. Lol.

I consider myself an experimental cook. I like to cook but I don't really know if what I make will be good.

The most complicated thing I've learned to cook so far is an omelet, which I looked up on Youtube.

Nope.

I can cook the basics: Burgers, Chicken, Pork Chops, Ribs, Steaks, Pasta, Etc.

But I would prefer the term "Decent" to describe my cooking.

There's not a lot of things I brag about or claim to be great at, but I am an awesome cook. Following a recipe isn't what makes a good cook, because you have to care. It's cliche but it's true. Two people could make the exact same thing with the same recipe and have different results. An easy example is pasta. My wife puts pasta in and walks away until she hears it boiling over. Some of the noodles end up too hard, lots of them are stuck to the pot after. She is cooking just because it needs to be done. I cook pasta and I will stand there and tend to the noodles the whole time. Stir them when they need it, adjust the temperature, add salt or oils if they are needed, etc. Big difference in the end.

But what I really want to know is - what the hell is your friend doing burning corn flakes??

Well I haven't killed anyone with food poisoning yet..... Also I wouldn't call following a recipe as being a good cook, being a good cook means you can improvise and can write your own recipes. No one would call someone a good chef if all they did is follow someone else's recipe.

I know how to barbeque. I grill my food with my dad, but if I did it by myself (with maybe some supervision) it would turn out good.
