I would not marry a woman who wouldn't because she would be a man hating feminist basically if she would think the idea of taking my name is offensive to her.

so she'd be saving me from making a huge mistake.

Deano

It is most certainly a bad sign. You can pretty much guarantee that she will be a pain in the ass. But if it takes someone to get close to marraige before they realise that then I guess they deserve what they get.

No I would not. Clearly if she isn't willing to take my last name, then we are too incompatible in our ways to even bother dating, let alone get married.

That's awesome. I think I would've been a little hurt if my wife didn't want to take my last name. And some people don't seem to get the bonding that goes with sharing the same last name.

My wife had a really cool last name, and I've got this ethnic Polish thing, but she was very happy and proud to take it. One of those million little things that shows how much she loves ya I guess.

If she wouldn't have taken my name, I dunno, it would be weird. Like really, is it that big of a deal? How many other little things are going to be a very big deal with you?

I won't say that it's 100% a dealbreaker, but it's pretty doubtful that I'd even want to marry a woman who wouldn't do it.

If I really loved her, then yes, I would, but I wouldn't take hers.

On the other hand, if she really loved me... why the heck wouldn't she take my name.

if the wife takes her husband's name, what happens if they get divorced? seems like a lot of hassle for no real benefit.

Probably not.

Call me old-fashioned but that's just kind of how things work where I live. Not taking a family name is almost disrepective.

It's still beneficial to keep the name even after you divorce.

For example.

Let's say I get in a car accident, and I call my mom, but she can't prove I'm her son because she doesn't have the available papers on her, if her last name isn't Garcia, the hospital won't let her visit me/inform her of my status.

It depends on the reasons. I mean, if she weren't wanting to carry on marriage traditions, why would we be getting married anyways? Marriage itself is a tradition.

Easily remedied by keeping a card or paper or some such in your wallet that says "in case of emergency contact" and then lists names and numbers.

With my friends, I'm one of the few that actually would take my husband's name. One of them has a hyphenated name and want to hyphenate it again

Don't know why it's always the male that's supposed to keep their name and the woman is supposed to lose hers. Doesn't make sense to me.

Do you mean like hyphenating the name or straight up just keeping her name and I keep mine or even worse, trying to make me take hers?

As to the latter two, not a chance in.... well..... Never.

All of the "Sure's" and "yes's" and any other perfectly fine responses are foreign to me. How progressively efeminite in my book. I guess every generation is down to buck tradition in some form or fashion. Too bad we can't buck divorce law and the settlements that entails then.

I don't think it has much to do with masculinity or femininity. Its a ridiculous tradition in the first place. If your ego is that big you'd reject a good woman because she wouldn't take a name then that seems a little nutty.

Besides, Whoever pops the big question usually gets to keep thier last name here ^^ (altho Im not sure if it is a law or just a common practise).
