Have not been in the situation as of yet, so i do not really know for sure. Maybe? Depends on circumstances involved. Initially, i would go with a bigfatno off the beat.
I wouldn't describe it as heroic, but I heard a woman screaming in the hallway of the apartment complex I used to live in around 3 years ago, ran out and chased off 2 guys, 1 of which was hitting her from behind as she tried to get into her apartment. I than stood with her until the police arrived.
