Well, here are more questions to be asked, then:

1. How much pain would it cause?

2. Is the dog attacking you or somebody else?

3. Would it put the dog out of misery if you were to kill it?

4. What would you shoot it with?

The question is pretty broad, and I'm sure there are more that can be asked.

I'd cut off all the dogs extremeties one by one with a kitchen knife while burning the wound of the decapitated limbs with a welding torch to stop the bleeding, just so it stays alive throughout the process.
