If Gamespot started printing your real name instead of your psuedonym would you stop using GameSpot? Why? Why not?

Obviously the main reason for this thread is the recently retracted proposal by Blizzard to do just this and increase accountability for the comments made

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/07/blizzard-forums-will-soon-display-your-real-name/

This is obviously hypothetical as I doubt any site that wants to keep it's user base would want to try it.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem. I'm not ashamed of my opinions and anyone that looks thru my posts can probably ascertain who I am anyway. I'd prefer not to but I don't really have a problem if they wanted to.

EDITY : Updated link, now it opens in a new window :S

I'd prefer to not use my real name but it wouldn't stop me from posting. Heck, any time I've been asked my name on here I have answered.

I wouldnt feel to great about it and would certainly complain if GS wanted to introduce something like that. If someone wants to know my first name they can ask, but last name is something id rather not share. However with what happened with Blizzard i dont think any site will be trying it any time soon :)

What's the point? Why would blizzard want to do this? Can't they just cancel someone's account if there's abuse?

Are you serious? You place those two on the same level?

You can hardly compare displaying credit card information to displaying a name.

You mean if they displayed the fake name that I signed up to most of them with?

I wouldn't have been too bothered if Blizzard had shown "Jason Statham Von Schwarzeneggersson" below my username on their forums, for example.

Woot! I don't get why people would be so against it. Think about how often you give your name out during the course of a week. If you don't mind giving it out in person why is that any different than on the internet. People can not do too much with your name.

If it changed and all my old posts displayed my name? I'd make sure to get banned or something because some of them I do not want anybody that know me to see. If It's an new slate I still would but I would always keep in check.

No, mostly because I don't want people I know in the real world to be able to google my name and see that I post on a videogame forum somewhat regularly.

I one time got a message from someone - not on here; on another site - asking me how I liked playing for the Saints.

It really depends. I share a name with an actor and a baseball player and possible a DJ ( ). I do use my real name at one forum (along with my nick) as it is a way that verifing who you are if you need support for their product. Being that you have to buy their product with a credit/debit card, it is easy to see who paid or pirated said product.

Hmmmmmmm, maybe if game publishers required a game to be registered first before being played, it would cut down on piracy.

This is the best answer I've read so far. I guess I'm the same. I don't post on facebook during work hours and I always post what I don't mind work colleagues seeing. I wouldn't necessarily want them to see what I post on a video games forum though... of course this would require that half of them learn how to use their computer without picking the mouse up of the desk... :)... yeah stuff like that I wouldn't want them to see :D

Why isn't this a poll.. then I wouldn't have to post. NO.Inconsistancy

I wanted to put a poll up but there was no option for it :( Not sure why

Because people are less likely to behave in an uncivil manner when they can be held accountable for their actions. It easy to be an internet tough guy when no one knows who you are.

I don't care if people know my name. I don't even hide it in my profile. Last name, though, would not be good. I've only told 1 person on GS my last name.
