Would you vote an Atheist into office?

Assuming the candidate was chosen to represent your respective party (Republican, Democrat, Independent, etc) would you opt to not vote for him/her for the sole fact that he/she does not believe in god?

According to this study [ http://www.secular.org/blogs/mike-meno/six-10-americans-less-likely-vote-atheist ]6 out of 10 Americans would be less likely to vote an Atheist into office

Hell. Yes. We don't need religion in government. (obviously when you vote for a religious person = more likely to mix religion with government)

It would have no effect on whether or not I vote for someone. Religion is a personal thing, I dont care what religion someone is unless they are totally crazy about it.

To be honest here in the UK I don't think a candidate's religious stance is ever particularly mentioned while campaigning.

I'd be more likely to not vote someone in if they were rabidly religious I think.

I don't care if somebody is an atheist or a theist, what matters is if I believe they can run the country properly.

I tend to look at a person's political viewpoints, not their religious ones. So, yeah.

True but its still used as leverage to get into office.

Its like if Pope Benedict came to the US (assuming he met all of the requirements to be President, which he obviously doesn') and eveyone voted for him because he's the Pope and his campaign slogan was like "Do what God would do, Vote Benedict 2012"

I'm an Athiest Australian,

And our first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard is a terrible, terrible PM who got into office by backstabbing our former PM and taking his seat as part of the Labour party (controlling party) when alot of Australians voted for Kevin rudd and not just the labour party so we were essentially robbed of our choice.

She also happens to be an athiest and an ugly big nosed ginger who cant run a country

It's sad that people would vote for an atheist for the WRONG reasons.

don't care if their Athiest, Homosexual, Muslim or any other group that is percieved ill by the society at large.

What matters to me first and foremoest are the person's political positions and not if they have a political axe to grind. Also their poliitcal history counts in my book for scrutiny.

I.E. i would not vote for an Athiest who would intentionally goes about making Thiests lives harder. I would not vote for a Muslim who made it a big point - if at all - to go against enemies of Islam and begin legislating religion and or morality.

Vast majority of people i've voted for are not my religion. and more then a few are not even my own demographic (race, sex).

I'm assuming in this hypothetical I agree with the persons policies. If so then yes. The person's religion or lack there of really doesn't matter me at that point.
