a woman in missouri faces up to 20 years in prison for creating a myspace profile to play a prank on a teenage girl.

the mom wants life in prison. what do you think? a little much? not enough?

http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id=4861399&page=1

i know what she did was wrong but you can't put someone in prison for that. she didn't make the girl commit suicide.

Actually, she did make the girl commit suicide:

"The mother of a teenager who committed suicide after becoming the target of an online hoax said today that the woman charged with perpetrating the hoax deserves life in prison."

And I think she should get life. What would you do if it was your kid who was targeted, TC?

If she's looking for someone to blame, she should be blaming herself for failing to recognize her daughter's extreme mental and emotional instabilities. Sane people don't hang themselves after getting "dumped" by a person on MySpace whom they've never met before.

I don't think the woman should get time at all. Sure, it's wrong to play pranks like this on people, but it shouldn't have ended in suicide unless that girl was really insecure, stupid and had low self-esteem, that's not the woman's fault.

life in prison for pulling a prank? i've been targeted by stuff like that. i'd teach my kids not to put your entire life into an internet boyfriend. that there's more important things in life.

sounds funny, but 20 years in prison? sounds a bit much for identity theft, and she got nothing out of it :?

I think the woman is a disgrace, but 20 years in prison for a hoax--even a hoax with tragic consequences--seems a bit much.

as cruel as the joke was, the fact the girl commited suicide shows that she had deeper problems than just dealing with an online boyfriend dumping her. Her parents are in the wrong somewhat for not realising or noticing strange social behaviour she was likely to be showing.

charge the woman with minor ID theft and harassment, nothing more. You cant lock everyone up for 20 years

I'd be embarrassed if a kid of mine committed suicide for something as stupid as this, actually. I'd consider him/her a disgrace as a son/daughter and myself a terrible failure as a father.

And I don't think she should get any time in prison. Yeah, it sucks that the girl committed suicide, but whose fault was that? Not the woman who played the prank.

Wow... Blaming the prankster is like blaming Doom for Columbine. Obviously the girl had deeper mental problems which were already present before the prank. It's the mother's fault for not recognizing the girl's fragile state of mind. I think 20 years is too much.

So it's legal to abuse mentally ill people? The fact that the girl was depressed (and the lady who did this to her knew about that) doesn't excuse any of it. If anything, that makes it worse -- she KNEW she was playing with fire. A rough analogy would be giving a two year old a loaded gun vs. an unloaded one.

I didn't see that the woman playing the prank knew about the girl's depression anywhere. I don't think she could get time in jail, what she did was wrong, but taking it to court is going too far IMO.

Well, say that this 'Lori Drew' really was the person who did this. In this case I believe she deserves nothing less than 20 years. Not only did she obviously know that this kid had depression, she deliberately targeted her and inflicted what I consider to be the absolute worst form of psychological bullying on the victim. If she was 49 years old, she should have been able to figure out the consequences of her actions, and hell, I think she most certainly did. Combining that with the actual consequences, and I think she deserves the full life sentence in prison. If she dies there, so be it.

So what is she in trouble for exactly? False inpersonation? I don't even think thats a word, but still.

She didn't touch the girl in anyway. She doesn't deserve prison. The girl however deserve mental help... Oh wait. Too late for that.

I do believe she should get something just because you aren't allowed to pretend to be a completely different person but it's the mother's fault she commited suicide.

EDIT: What she should get though should be very minimal.

That's nonsense. There is no reason to suspect she knew her actions would lead to the girl's suicide. Even if she did, she still wouldn't deserve such a severe sentence. People who commit vehicular manslaughter don't even receive punishments like that.

Seriously, since you obviously don't know **** about mental illness like the majority of the people here just keep your mouth shut. There is only so much to be done with stuff like this and depression is something that doesn't just magically go away, not with medication and not with supportive people. Hell, one of the reasons people get depressed is because they get blinded to the support they have waiting there for them.

The mom who did this is a disgrace and should probably lose her kids, if only to prevent her from trying to ruin her daughters enemies lives again. Quite honestly I can only hope she gets killed in someway so we have one less waste of flesh on this earth. Her actions make me sick and I think people messing around and taking advantage of people who are mentally ill only deserve the worse.

Good parenting produces self-confident kids with good self-esteem, as opposed to depressed, insecure kids, of course how that girl was raised had something to do with all this. :|

Edit: You seem angry/upset about something, may I suggest relaxing? Some deep breathing maybe?

*sigh* if I didn't want to be rigged into another argument I shouldn't have posted that. "Even if she did", she definitely would. That is basically murder, regardless of the method. The reason vehicular manslaughter isn't punished as badly is because that it usually isn't intended homocide. The reason I suspect she did know is because she pulled the hoax in the first place. She had to have some reason for thinking that the girl would fall for something as low as that. Maybe not a good reason, but a reason nonetheless.

Maybe the fact that the girl was 13? I think there's no way this could be made into premeditated murder, it was just a prank. No one would expect a person with half a brain to kill themselves over something so trivial/stupid.

[QUOTE="Thechaninator"][QUOTE="bsman00"][QUOTE="msudude211"]Actually, she did make the girl commit suicide:

"The mother of a teenager who committed suicide after becoming the target of an online hoax said today that the woman charged with perpetrating the hoax deserves life in prison."

And I think she should get life. What would you do if it was your kid who was targeted, TC?

black_cat19

well no she should not, if i was the parents of the daughter who killed herself, i would have raised her better, so she would not commit suicide over a boy on the Internet, she must have been very very insecure....

Oh yes because the way you raise your kids has SOOO much bearing on mental illness:roll:

Hey, did you know that depression can be caused by a simple chemical imbalance? No you probably wouldn't, because people here seem to like to think they can look down on depressed people because they apparently have self-esteem issues of their own.

I am angry because time and time again I run into complete morons who don't understand a damn thing about mental illness yet they think they can run around looking down on these people and act as if they are somehow "weak" or lesser people.

Here in Michigan, we pretty much completely LACK public mental health facilites thanks to the idiots out here being tricked by the government into thinking they "aren't neccessary". I have a friend with loads of illnesses who can only recieve minimal treatment because of this, because everything revolves so much around money these days and people have lost all sense of caring for eachother.

[QUOTE="deepdreamer256"][QUOTE="Oleg_Huzwog"]

[QUOTE="deepdreamer256"]Well, say that this 'Lori Drew' really was the person who did this. If she dies there, so be it.black_cat19

That's nonsense. There is no reason to suspect she knew her actions would lead to the girl's suicide. Even if she did, she still wouldn't deserve such a severe sentence. People who commit vehicular manslaughter don't even receive punishments like that.

*sigh* if I didn't want to be rigged into another argument I shouldn't have posted that. "Even if she did", she definitely would. That is basically murder, regardless of the method. The reason vehicular manslaughter isn't punished as badly is because that it usually isn't intended homocide. The reason I suspect she did know is because she pulled the hoax in the first place. what was her mental illness? ................

I think it was just simple depression. Depression as in the medical condition, not the mood.

then i am justifyed in what i was saying, depression is not mental illness, we all F IN get deppresed at some time in our life

No actually you aren't.

The MEDICAL condition involves a chemical imbalance that the girl would have no control over. Because of that, your comments are basically the same as calling a person who died of cancer weak. I guess they should have just "caught it earlier", except that both depression and cancer take a WHILE to treat. From what I know, they actually don't expect anti-depressants to have any real effect for months.....

Honestly, I'm more perplexed as to why a grown woman would do something like that.

I think the 20 years max is suitable. It's not the mom's fault that the child on myspace was extremely unstable, and willing to kill herself over an online relationship. The mother of the child should have been there for her, and help her if she noticed she was upset.

Shes just scum. Probably abused drugs/alcohol when she was a teen as that can permanantly lock someones maturity level. I have seen it with my stepdad who's has alcohol problems. Hes in his mid 40's yet he acts less mature than me, a 19 year old. The man will actually try claiming random groceries his and will throw a fit if someone messes with them. I haven't seen behavior like that since I was like MAYBE 10.....

Now THAT'S a good question, that's the kind of immaturity you'd expect from a teenage boy, not a grown adult.

You have no idea how easy it is to hide depression. Most people can NOT pick up on it. Same goes for stuff like generalized anxiety disorder. ALOT of people with GAD will simply be though of ass "worry worts" and nothing more....
