[QUOTE="bionicle_lover"]i saw on some channel, maybe it was history, discovery or natgeo but they were interviewing a satanist (or i think he was) and he mentioned these rules and also said that they worship satan as the first rebel or something like that... not cause he's evil.Saturos3091
They don't worship Satan in the sense that he's a deity. They just believe that what the Biblical Satan stands for is admirable (rebellion; being true to yourself against uncompromising odds).

o ya, you're right. i was going to edit it after i posted but my edit thing didnt show up so i just moved on but ya, i dont think anyone would actually worship satan himself. my bad. :P

'Don't voice your opinion or advice unless your asked too'

lol I just think this is funny, namely because of the possible consequences that could happen for breaking this rule.

Objectively speaking, Satanism has done far less harm to humanity than Christianity has done.

After all, Satanists haven't perpetrated any Inquisitions, witch-burnings or Crusades, have they now?

Hmm. Wasn't it Jesus who said that one should judge a tree by its fruit, or words to that effect?

It's rather ironic that, by Christ's own standards, Satanists as a group are less worthy of condemnation than Christians!

Stesilaus

This is such an obvious generalization.

I agree. I especially love the parts about destroying people for merely annoying you. That's always a good way to go about life.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don't stop, destroy them.

I mean even before I read this, I lived by some of these, and I'm not even a Satanist, I especially live by #11

I think they mean by "destroying" to find a way to keep them from annoying you that'll hopefully keep them from doing anything like that again (like telling them off), "destroying" their ability to annoy you. The word choice is really poor. If everyone did that I'm pretty sure we'd all be a bit happier.

Exactly. As an extremely impulsive (speaking-wise) person, it's kinda tough to follow those rules. What's great is that there is no serious punishment for breaking those rules other than perhaps getting myself into trouble (which is something I know how to avoid), so you can ignore them if you wish. I find a lot of the rules/ideas/"sins" applicable to my life, so I think a lot of it is perfectly acceptable (although some of the stuff like "destroy them" is a bit ridiculous; it just seems like LaVey didn't have a thesaurus on him when he came up with the ideas).

Compulsively following LaVey's Satanist principles is just kind of a joke, especially since the guy contradicts himself so much. Yes, I've read the Satanic Bible.

I'm pretty sure it means "kill them". Here's why:

- rule 4: "If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy."

- The only rules against killing pertain to children and animals.

- The only rule that could be taken as "don't kill people" is the part of rule 11 (the one in question) where it says "When walking in open territory, bother no one." That basically means don't go around making trouble. However, the second part of it says that should someone piss you off you've got full right to take care of them as you see fit, including murder.

He's more kind of a psycho rock star than a level-headed thinker, if anything.

He seems grudged against the Christian Church, but that makes him seem like a brat. Someone who is truly level-headed could see the beauty as well as the "evil" in any situation.

Also, if the opposite of the Christian sins (pride, lust, anger, gluttony, etc.) are supposed to be the virtues of Satanism, and the Christian virtues are the equivalent of the "sins:"

lust - chastity

gluttony - temperance

greed - charity

anger - patience

sloth - diligence

envy - kindness

pride - humility

There is nothing wrong with practicing the Christian virtues as well. Things should not be done compulsively, things should be done when they "make sense."

That's why there Christian precepts I find very wise and there are Satanist precepts I find very wise and I would rather cherry-pick the good from both sides and see what "truly" works instead of just the rock star "sin all the time yeah it's so awesome" mentality that LaVey tries to portray because it's so evil.

Being a Satanist isn't about hating the Christian church, it's about using reason and trying to make sense of things, and there is nothing wrong with combing the good from both sides to create something that truly works.

For someone who claims to "be responsible for yourself," how can he then go and promote "sloth" as a virtue?

Seems contradictory to me.

No. As stupidity is the number one "sin," wouldn't you think sacrificing your freedom to get what you want (the idea/goal of Satanism) by killing someone and getting thrown in jail is a stupid move? LaVey didn't even follow his own rules half the time. He was quite pretentious himself. I think the concepts he lays down are fascinating but they are definitely too raw and unrefined to really be a distinct religious code.

He seems grudged against the Christian Church, but that makes him seem like a brat. Someone who is truly level-headed could see the beauty as well as the "evil" in any situation.

He grew up and lived in a time when Christianity was still quite dominant (as did most of our grandparents). I think it just got to him over time, especially with the whole hippy "peace and love" movement. :P

Also, if the opposite of the Christian sins (pride, lust, anger, gluttony, etc.) are supposed to be the virtues of Satanism, and the Christian virtues are the equivalent of the "sins:"

lust - chastity

greed - charity

Indeed. That's why I don't solely follow one or the other to the exact point. I just find a lot of the Satanist virtues to be very appealing, as are a large majority of the Christian virtues (kindness, diligence, etc.).

Being a Satanist isn't about hating the Christian church, it's about using reason and trying to make sense of things, and there is nothing wrong with combing the good from both sides to create something that truly works.

Combining ideas from all over is the best approach I've found for myself as well. I think a lot of his ideas just need some refinement and they'd appeal much better to a lot of people.

Too much Christian morals or too much Satanist morals and one is going to knock themself out.

Things should be used responsibly.

The majority of "Satanists" are not Satan-worshipping goat-sacrificers. They are just normal people with their own outlook on life.

foxhound_fox
that was my impression of them because of my parents and many other christians I've lived near. They make them seem like soulless people who do nothing but sin all day have joy in watching other people suffer....:x

I imagine you were more afraid of the bow down to Satan believing him to be an actual deity and having evils powers kind of Satanists? Amirite? The actual Satanic church is nothing like that.

Some of the The Nine Satanic Sins are pretty reasonable too:

  1. Herd Conformity

AtomicBaconBits

Ehm by living by their rules they are already guilty of herd conformity. Satanists are also a herd.

Isn't the whole point of Satanism to be a rebel and reject from normal society? Most of these rules are rules that everyone lives by except they change words around and use words like 'lair' and 'destroy', I guess its an attempt to be different and I honestly think its very strange.

It's not much different fundamentally than the ten commandments...I'm not sure what you were expecting them to be...spazzx625
I thought theyd be more along the lines of "do not go to sleep unless you have sacrificed a sinner to your almighty and all evil lord of death and destruction" (that is referring to satan not bush)

I find it kind of silly that you're under the impression that Satanists want people to be scared them. I for one, when I did practice Satanism, had no intention of scaring anyone.

Well, you have to admit for anyone not educated on the church, "Satanist" sounds like a person who would worship the diety of satan and would in general be aggressively anti-christian. Not to mention the traditional "sacrifices" and music and religious hoops they have like any other church.

My personal rules for Satanism:

1. Wear leather and ride a motorbike.

2. Kill the bunnies. They are not your cute furry friends.

3. The above rule also applies especially, to kittens.

4. Vampires and blood is always cool. Even if you hated Twilight, it is now your favourite film.

5. Destroy any people who fit into any of these categories as you see fit: Male, Female.

6. Any people who fall in between these categories should be killed twice just for good measure.

7. Take off your shoes in someone else's house.

8. Have fun!
