I don't know about you guys, but I did not even know about this. The fact that this has been in production for 5 years and it has never been on CNN or FOX? Crazy...I mean this is a big deal, we are talking about possible stranglet's and micro black holes here...

HERE is the article.

As for the whole destruction of the Earth thing, I doubt it, but there could be some serious consequences of firing this thing. But at the same time, this could figure out a whole lot of unknowns for Science.

We also live with the chance a large astroid could smash into Earth destroying it, we live with a chance that the Sun could have an extremely large and intense solar flare reaching out to earth, cooking us in seconds. There are infinite amounts of slight chances the world could end right now.

Good to know that we are on the verge of destruction :P

I have a feeling that these scientists would rather risk the planet than let their precious creation go to waste :|

Yeah. True. And without the magnetic fields, we'll be obiliterated.

Most of the things we as humans do have remote chances of causing catostrophic damage to humans and earth, the U.S. and Russia alone have enough nuclear missiles to destroy the world 6 times over, Nuclear power plants have chances of meltdowns, we pollute and destroy our Ozone, our Earth is already over-populated and will be extremely over-populated to the point where we can't grow enough food in the near future. We have control over all of those don't we?

Yup, but Solar flames that hit near Earth are managable, and our magnetic field takes care of them. I'm talking about a gigantic, catastrophic, extremely remote chance one that completely scorches Earth.

He's right though, a large solar flare is the single biggest threat to Earth, it always has been. It is honestly pretty amzing that we have never been hit by any type of solar phenomenon in the past 60 years...although, every passing year there is more and more of a chance simply because of the expanding of the Sun.

I agree. I don't see the possible humanitarian benefits this device could produce.

I don't think anyone should be experimenting with balck holes anywhere near Earth.

It's not black holes exactly, it is dark matter, which is basically the fabric of space. If we could discover the physics behind dark matter and the lining of the 10 dimensions, then sci-fi stuff like "warp travel" and teleportation could become a...well, a reality.

Pretty much my thought as well. I don't think anyone in the world has the right ot experiment like this and I hope that some sort of law injunction does put and end to it.

I looked up the device on Google and I found this page on the safety risks and how near impossible they are.

Still, I think we shouldn't risk our existence for something that doesn't yield results I see as helpful to humanity's survival.

Very good find. See, most of those would have such a small chance of happening, let alone no chance in happening at all. The only thing that would even be a minuscule threat would be a micro blackhole, in which it would form at the base of atom separation and then proceed to sink directly threw the entire planet, fall out into space, and virtually make the Earth collapse in on itself...not so bad if you ask me :P

NASA can't launch a shuttle as long as there is even a 1% risk.

What's the actual point of this? Seriously, is it going to REALLY further human life? Or the best thing that could happen is teleportation. Woopy dee doo. It takes like 13 hours to go from one side of the world to the other on a plane. I'd rather take t he 13 hours than the tiny chance of accidently killing everything.

We don't mean terrestial travel, more like travel through space. If they can learn how to manipulate the Higgs Boson particle that theoritically controls inertia the faster then light travel could be possible.

Just about every modern technology we have today is the result of research which was once considered useless.
