Poll Wtf is Google tracking my voice? (25 votes)

Yes 76%
No 8%
Maybe 16%

So, three days ago I was talking with my neighbor about the Holocaust. I went back home, got on Youtube and guess what? The first video about that.

Yesterday, same neighbor. We were talking about 13 reasons Why, my neighbor got on facebook and the first ad that appeared was that too.

Finally, today we were talking about my trip to Peru next week and when my Friend NOT ME got on facebook the first news feed he had was about a friend in common we have that is from Peru. WTF.

Honestly, it's insane. The weird thing was that the Holocaust video, it's something I haven't googled or him prior to us talking in months. So how did that appear? I understand the 13 Reasons Why and Peru thing, but really?

I'm your neighbour and you left your PC on and Facebook signed in, so I just snuck into your house and decided to Google everything that we talked about.

I made sure to let Facebook look at what I was searching for, I thought it would be hilarious and it is, you made a thread here on GS, which is like the centre of the internet.

it's possible. do you have a voice agent active on your phone or home assistant that requires a keyword to activate? if so it needs to listen to all your speech in order to recognize the keyword.

it's not a far leap to then be using all the non-activated voice data to do background stuff.

You're only just aware of this? Your phone is always listening to you, tailoring ads to your life. Creepy AF, but no harm done really :)

No it's okay. I'm also in the big data business, lol. I was just surprised at how accurate it has gotten. I'm also curious as to what exactly is causing the tracking. I imagine it's my phone, because i never get those random ads when i'm far from it.

i've noticed this too.

me and my mates often innocently talk about how attractive certain girls are and how we would not be averse to sexual relations with them. more often than not, soon as i get home the first site i go on will invariably have a "click to meet young sluts wanting to f*ck in your local area" type advert. happens far too often for it to be coincidence

Your voice is being tracked. The same thing is happening with my coworker and his phone. Many times we would talk about a certain topic, he would get a popup news article regarding a topic we were talking about in the office. He too would joke that we were being listened to. I think it's true. lol

This happened to me many times. My ads change to things I recently talk about without ever using my iphones internet to look them up.

Google maps also successfully learned where I worked and my home/house because of the always on location settings.

It is creepy AF.

For real. Obviously searching for them yields results, but simply talking makes me think that google (at least i have an android phone) is using voice tracking also to collect data, which is interesting.

This is news to you? They've been doing targeted ad-placement for years now. Actively using a device's microphone is just a new tool.
