i keep hearing it in movies and stuff. i dont get it. waht is it ? im not american btw.neversnow24It changes. One huge aspect in the older years was to "own a home". That isnt the case really anymore. Its the milestones that society, in america, at that moment, deem as ultimate goals. A home, own land, wife/husband and children, and a job to support that family. Etc.
A middle class house, white picket fence, a puppy, 2.5 children and a happy family, all suceeding in the land of oportunity.
But its a load of bull****, thats why you only see it in the movies.
seems a good answer thx.I think its to follow whatever dream you have and succeed in it and thats the American dream cause back in the day, USA was the place where you could "make your dreams come true".

and about the movies, i see many movies and people life arent that great in many of them.neversnow24Well in movies the American Dream and its possibilities can be emphasised and highlighted by showing you the cases of those who succeeded but started from the "bottom".
So its only reasonable you would see sad situation in relation to it.
happens everywhere dont worryA lie, greed, violence, big headedness, steping on others in order to acheive ultimate indulgence.

It's basically this fairytale that if you work hard enough in America you will become one the richest people in it.
However reality says that not everyone can be rich.
The American is a lie, made by Arrogant a** holes, who cares. Back then it used to be A family, suburban, kids, a dog, great career, money to support it all. I hate that.
Now it's, a bunch of over sexulized women, fast cars big trucks "Pimped" out, bunch of ugly tacky clothes with jewlery to go with it, a big mansion or 2, some space on a TV. Basically it became intertwinned with the celeberity lifestyle, of which is wasn't back then when ignorant celeb culture came about. And the right to brag, and not just be a snob about it. Basically what a mainstream rapper and pop star has turned it into for generation Y.
My dream? A small but well fitting house or Apartment, A girl friend or wife, a nice small car, 1 kid, a job, a good collection of video games, movies, and music, a laptop, and some healthy food. Forget all of that glitz and glamour crap. Give me an average and simple life, and peace from d-bags and fools.
Also a few boring friends, who like to talk about philosophy
Not everyone needs to be rich, because once they're all rich and "happy" they figure out more ways to try and take, kill, and grab everyone elses money. Also the fact that everyone being rich would mean no low workers, subordinates, or lackys.
i keep hearing it in movies and stuff. i dont get it. waht is it ? im not american btw.neversnow24What ever the dreamers ambitions are. If he/she reaches those ambitions then they have achieved the "american dream".
Come to America from overseas with nothing but the clothes on your back, work your way up and eventually be able to own a home, have a family, and have a fast car =P

Wow, I like your american dream a lot. Only I'd want 2 kids instead of 1, in my experience people who grew up without siblings are a bit weird. On the other hand, we're all a bit weird, so i guess in the end it doesn't matter :P
"The American Dream, that has lured tens of millions of all nations to our shores in the past century has not been a dream of material plenty, though that has doubtlessly counted heavily. It has been a dream of being able to grow to fullest development as a man and woman, unhampered by the barriers which had slowly been erected in the older civilizations, unrepressed by social orders which had developed for the benefit of classes rather than for the simple human being of any and every class."

counterpoint: "I came to America because of the great, great freedom which I heard existed in this country. I made a mistake in selecting America as a land of freedom, a mistake I cannot repair in the balance of my lifetime" -Albert Einstein"The American Dream, that has lured tens of millions of all nations to our shores in the past century has not been a dream of material plenty, though that has doubtlessly counted heavily. To have a happy and successful life. Your own home, kids, wife / husband, a cat or dog, a well paying job. To be able to afford a comfortable lifestyle. When I say comfortable, I mean pretty much average but with the occasional luxury or just with money to spare.
Well I assume if if you live in America and have a dream it's an American dream, same with having a dream in any other country but with those countries name in front of the dream. I have British Dreams :D
