its like, after they see one of those 'be a game tester' commercials, its their dream job. its misleading bs. theres this guy that sits by me in math, and almost every day he talks about how hes gonna become rich by playing video games all day. bs, theres no way youll become rich by being a game tester. my uncle started as a game tester for pandemic and he said he was paid like $30k a year. this kid thinks that if he get hired, works nonstop every day, hell have a million dollars by the end of a year. just made me lol when he said that. whats even worse, he thinks that what hell do is clock in, play game for hours, clock out, and eventually hell get paid. lol, nobody will pay you to do virtually nothing but take up space. my uncle (same one) said that as a game tester, he played an incomplete build of the game (looks like **** i imagine) and not only did he have to look for bugs, he had to look for it in the code, document it, and every so often hed send his notes to the devs. devs fix it, improve the build, and evertually they have the full game. also, to be a game tester, you need a real education. typically comp programming as your major and art as your minor. this kid wants to just walk into the office of a game studio, and expects that they will hand him some games and he will be paid for playing them. thats never gonna happen, without an education. and even then, the job market there is flooded, so i really dont see why people want that job. does anyone else think theyre just ill informed? be you one of them?

They're just kids going through a phase. 98% of them most likely will end up doing something else.

I have friends that are my age and still want to do that :|

Kids think its all fun and games when working with games, its boring, tedious work.

I watched a making of video of halo 3 and they would take hours trying to jump different ways to make sure they can't get outside the boundaries of the levels.

Tell him to be a mechanical engineer like me, if he is smart that is. It is a growing field, one which if you get lucky and watch you money can very well make you rich.

hes smart, but hes lazier, and his laziness is what makes him want to be a game tester.

So many kids want to move to Japan and be "One with the people" because they somehow think that simply because they like Asian girls and anime that they were "meant to be asian" Little do they know that a lot Japan is a very closed off soceity to foreigners, they would get shunned a lot for trying to live their culture.

Maybe they think that it's a job they'll actually enjoy...but when video games become a job, I'm sure they'd see that game testing isn't all too glamorous...

Back in grade 6 and 7 half of the people in my class were always talking about being video game testers. They've finally grown up now. Sure, I like video games, but I'm not going to make that my career.

I was all excited in 2001 when Sony flew me to San Diego to interview for a job as a programmer for the PS2's network infrastructure. Then I got there and was totally parboiled by the interview :( Last time I ever did an interview without at least a week of research on likely questions and such.

When they grow up they'll know the truth and eventually learn. People want that job because all you do is play game which is what people want to become. It actually depends on what company you work for and what position of how much you get payed. I was thinking about being one of them but not anymore and now want to be involved in computer science.

I see your point, as much as I do like games, I wouldn't want to play for hours at a time, and taking notes ruins the experience. For that much money a year is why I would never do it.

They saw Grandma's Boy.gasmaskman

That's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this topic.

I say let them become what they want, after-all its their choice and once they have their heart set on it they probably wont hear reason no matter what. They'll have to see for themselves what kind of job it really is, that way they don't blame you or someone else for the rest of their life because they feel like they missed "the opportunity of a life time" for their dream job.

Besides, we need someone to test games before we get them so we don't have to put up with bugs, don't exactly like having to put up with problems after paying $60 USD for a game :D ;)

i think i was the same when i was in like freshman in high school then i noticed that no colleges in ct have that, i don't feel lke living at school. boring stuff, play the same thing over and over to find bugs. i know sometimes when they are on tight time they have to work long hours.

i'm right now in 2 year school in multimedia. Now i want to be a game artist, i barely did any research but said u need to know how to draw (GOOD)

I was a video game tester for EA Chicago before it closed down. It wasn't that great though. The game always froze and glitched up. It was fun at first, but playing the same stage over and over to find bugs....it gets tiring.
