Nobody's home. It's a dark night. Your house is quiet. You decide to watch tv.. You turn the tv on, And then you are violated. By who? By what?. No other than your tv. I'm talking about subliminal messages. Whats a subliminal message you say.. According to wikipedia its "A subliminal message is a hidden or covert message embedded in another signal, designed to pass below the normal limits of the human consciousness". So you can be watching tv and you feel the sudden urge for mcdonalds. You have no clue why? Guees what... Its subliminal messages. e.g. a commercial for McDonalds is going to make you crave a burger more than flashing the McDonald's logo without your conscious perception.

Subliminal messages aren't real at least in advertising as you imply. It was a phenomena created by a guy named James Vicary in 1857 that claimed he knew a new way to advertise that was subliminal adv. He did a report on experiment he did to try and prove it worked. It made him lots of money. He admitted it was all a fraud and then dissapperaed never to be seen again.

The concept was then carried on by Wilson BRyan Key in the 70s who wrote claiming to discover subliminal messages though they were all just his perception. He said it was a massive cover up by the adv industry. Truth is he was just a conspiracy theorist who used the issue to write books and make money. He wasn't even an expert on any the subjects pertaining to subliminal adv.

Then came Dr. Bernard McGrane who claimed subliminal adv was used to appeal to 2 repressed subjects: sex and death. Like the men before him he was just another crazy maiking an issue out of nothing.

Truth is subliminal messages in adv are nothing more than an urban myth. It's like this you can look at any ad and interpret and see different things just like you can look at the clouds and see all kinds of different things.
