It depends what your into, my favorite of all time is the original Hulk by "The King" Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. Batman Year One is good but really Frank Miller is overrated, at least to me. If Mr. Miller is the reason that you bought that you should read his Daredevil run also. Also Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol run is heady stuff. For pure comic book fun, Savage Dragon is an excellent choice. I could go on for quite some time.

The last series I read was Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robinson, but that was almost 3 years ago.

I haven't read just a whole lot, but I really liked watchmen, and still do, its just more mainstream now so nerds think I'm a **** for liking it all of a sudden.

I'm really not into comics, although I like super heroes and all, it's not that acessible around here. Last one I read was Scott Pilgrim, I liked it a lot.

Spawn has a twisted since of humor.. For instance I remember in one part where the two detectives finally found the child serial killer who was posing as a ice cream man.. He was hanging formt eh cieling by his arms.. With ice cream scoops and popscile sticks stuck in him with writing across his chest.. Saying "Boys screamed and girls screamed, so I made him scream and scream and scream."

Of all time? Preacher by Garth Ennis (writer) and Steve Dillon (art). It's nine volumes, and the last volume, though you need to read the rest of the series to get it, is probably my favourite trade of all time and is, to this day, the only piece of literature to make me cry, and I'm an English Lit grad student. It's the most lewd, crude, and violent book you can get, but the characters are just so lovable and fully realized and beneath all the excess there's a LOT going on meaning-wise, whether it be about religion, culture, or gender.

Current on-going Thor series, that started with JMS. I'm pretty sure it's obvious enough though, based on my sig.

I'd have to go with Old Man Logan, that was such a fantastic graphic novel.

I may just have to make a purchase. I trust your wise knowledge in the graphic novel medium :P

Currently reading, "Y The Last Man" graphic novel. It's pretty good so far. A couple others that seem like good reads (I haven't read them yet, but am planning on picking them up) are: "100 Bullets" and "The Walking Dead." My favorite comic series growing up were Spider-Man, and X-Men. Might want to pick up a few of the classic stories like "God Loves, Man Kills" and "The Dark Phoenix Saga."

In addition to Preacher by Garth Ennis others have mentioned I will also say these others are favorite comic books and GN's.

  • Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis
  • The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One by Frank Miller
  • Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker
  • Criminal by Ed Brubaker
  • The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman
  • Fables by Bill Williamham
  • 100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello
  • All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison
  • New Gods by Jack Kirby
  • Girl by Kevin J. Taylor
  • G.I. Joe (Marvel Comics 1982-94) by Larry Hama
  • Hellboy by Mike Mignola
  • The Goon by Eric Powell

There's more but would make this list waaaay to long.

  1. Batman: The Long Halloween
  2. Sin City (the collection)
  3. Watchmen
  4. All-Star Superman
  5. Star Wars

Also the sequels, Dark Victory and The Haunted Knight. In fact if it says Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale you won't regret spending your money on it. Superman For All Seasons was very touching. By the way, they're comic books, what's all this "graphic novel" BS?

What he said.

really? I read like the first 60 and boy did they suck. The art is truly stellar but the writing is just atrocious! Anyways, the best Comic/Graphic novels by far are Sandman and Lucifer.

Todd McFarlane isn't an Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman by any means, but atrocious is certainly a stretch. I will admit, there are some dialogue bubbles where I just kind of cringe, but I think he has a good sense of humor and has consistently improved throughout his career.

Some great ones:

V for Vendetta - Alan Moore
Swamp Thing - Alan Moore (6 or 7 volumes)
The Sandman - Neil Gaiman (10 volumes)
Preacher - Ennis (9 volumes)
Sin City - Frank Miller (7 volumes, first 4 are incredible last 3 are okay)
Y: The Last Man - Vaughan (10 volumes)

Of those, I'd say I most strongly recommend V for Vendetta, The Sandman, and Preacher.

Dave Sim's "High Soceity" collected story arc is probably my favorite graphic novel. Dave Sim is the Dostoevsky of the comic book world and is criminally underrated these days. After that a few of my top picks would be:

  • Mage by Matt Wagner
  • Lucifer's Halo by Michael Linsner
  • Hellboy by Mike Mignola
  • The Goon by Eric Powell
  • Locas by Jaime Hernandez
  • Those Annoying Post Brothers by Matt Howarth
  • Black Hole by Charles Burns

Dave Sim is definitely a thinker and philosopher in addition to being a great writer with a fantastic imagination. The evolution of Cerebus is probably the single greatest process of character development in the history of comics. I don't know that he is underrated so much as he's an unknown due to the fact that he's never worked for the big two, either way it's an awful damn shame.
