One of the very few books I've had to read for English class I actually thoroughly enjoyed, it's also my favorite book, period.
The first three books of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, especially the third book, A Storm of Swords. After reading the first two, the things that happen in that book hit you likea train. &*%$. GOES. DOWN.
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is another good one that I read recently. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that series.

Wow, some people enjoy some bad literature around here. I like a lot of romantic, 1800s poetry and fiction. Definitely a Melville and Poe fan. On contemporary literature, I really enjoy Stephen King a lot. Good pleasure read. NAPK1NS
lol you talk about people enjoying bad literature then proceed to mention stephen king as one of your favorites.
anyways picking my favorite book is like picking my favorite record, it's impossible. but here are few of my most cherished..
(i know it's a compilation but it's an amazing compilation)
In spirit of my sig I guess I'll say A Storm of Swords part 1 and 2. Certainly the best fantasy book I've read.
Oh yes, here are the covers (the British ones mind you, not the sucky American ones);
Anyway, I could rant about it forever, but tl;dr version is - a brilliantly real set of characters, writing that makes the 1300 total pages or so go in no time, plus a story and universe better than LotR. I love LotR.

I prefer the American covers. I think the british covers are poorly made, as that they are not wholly representative of the series. The American covers atleast uses the sigils of the major houses in the series.

I'd have to go with Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
This is a gross oversimplification, but its essentially to the science fiction genre what Lord of the Rings is to the fantasy genre. Having read both series of books, I definately prefer Dune, but that is just me. Every single book in the original series is enjoyable, and all for completely different reasons. The original Dune is an epic worthy of reading by essentially everyone. Later books such as God Emperor of Dune delve into philosophy, discussing everything from godhood, worship, the relationship between sex and faith, and all manner of things. Later books even go into suspense as it has a small group of survivors running evading an overwhelming force.
There is so much beauty, thought, and creativity put into these books (specifically the original series), I would almost call it a sin for anyone (especially gamespotters, give our relative nerdism...we are on a video game site, and we havbe all played our fair share of scifi) to not have read these.
Even the far inferior House and Butlerian Jihad novels Brian Herbert (Frank's son) wrote were enjoyable, albeit extremely gory. The two concluding books by Brian Herbert (Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune were his best, imo, as they were based strictly on Frank's notes from what I've heard).
