I just wanted to know what OT's stance on piracy was. Hate it, love it, or don't care?

Under Section 7: "Discussion of mod chips, copying games, playing copied games, cracking games, No-CD patches, piracy releases, homebrew, copyrighted ROMs, copyrighted ISOs, and basically anything related to game, movie, TV, or music piracy is not permitted."

If I could wear an eye patch, steer a boat around aimlessly, and drink rum all day. My life would be complete.

the man was obviously talking about pillaging villages and raiding ships, Mr. No Fun. anyway, i see piracy as a means of survival. i got a ton of gold and treasure on my last voyage. me skipper however didn't make it. god bless his little soul. took a cannon right in the noggin.

lol truer words have never been spoken  And I think you guys misunderstand the TOS. It doesnt say you can't talk about the topic of piracy, its says you can't spread infromation or participate in piracy. Its like, you are allowed to talk about racism here, but you aren't allowed to make racist comments. I think this thread is abiding by the forum rules...thats my interpretation atleast :P

It's wrong and and just as bad as stealing, however, that doesn't mean that I've never done it.

I'm neutral towards it.

I find people who are completely against it to be foolish most of the time.

I use it to find new artists, and if I dislike the album, I don't buy it. If I do, I end up buying. Most of the time I end up buying the albums.

I used to be one, arrrrrrg! Had drawes full of Amiga Disks, thousands of the things. Sell them 50p a disk. Left all that behind now, I buy the games I like, tend to rent console games from online game rental companies. I play MMO's also but not since I stopped playing WoW well over a year ago has any of them held my attention for long.

If MI5 are going to come barging through my door to arrest me over those Amiga disks, I will deny it saying I was lying just to look cool in front of the Gamespot community.

I'm fairly against it. If an artist makes, say a song, and it has value, they are entitled to the revenue it brings in. And piracy costs them money. We think now everything music wise should be free because of all the programs out there, but it still doesn't make it right IMO.

i support buying the product if it is new, but if you're going to have to purchase something that isn't from the company itself than why not. I mean its not like the money would be going to them anyway.

My opinion is I'm broke, so in the meantime I'll keep downloading stuff.

However, I don't think having a downloaded mp3 substitutes the original, physical CD, I have always prefered original products even if I can get pirates for free, so as soon as I have the money I'll start replacing all those pirate albums with their original counterparts one by one.

I just find it funny, if they do start jailing piracy though (do they already? IDK). Think about it, you are jailing someone over what they viewed or listened to. Not for their specific or certain actions, but for how long they can seed that torrent. But yes, I get why they would jail them in the first place.

That's what I do. I download to listen and determine if I want to buy it, and then I buy it when I get the money. Some people stream music to sample it, I just download it.

Although I believe that piracy is wrong. Piracy of music does give them advertisement. This advertisement can lead to making of fans which then buy merch such as t-shirts and going to shows. Most artists make most of their money off of concerts and touring. Merch and Cds plays a lot less of a role in their revenue.

I agree with nearly every point you make here Avistann, but while it does give them advertisement it can slow down CD sales. And in my job, I would consider that stealing, if there was an unknowable/unmeasureable plus to some pirating my work. A case here recently is the release of GNR's Chinese Democracy. Their lawyers did a study on the amount of downloads (pirated) vs. actual sales. Working with a conserative figure (like 20% of downloaders would have bought the CD) it was still well in the 6 figures that GNR lost out on. And this can be said for most any band these days. If they did the work, and intend to charge, their should be penalties for pirating.

Keep in mind that people that pirated the album may not have ever bought the album. It's impossible to determine how much the band lost because we don't know how many people would have purchased it had piracy not been available.

I don't do it, but i think that companies like EA who pump out cheapie, half finished games with drm slathered all over deserve to have their software pirated. It breaks my heart though when indie games like Zeno Clash or World of Goo for example are pirated.

see the fleet foxes' views on piracy. it's clear that piracy effects certain industries more than other. even different facets of the music industry are effected differently. crap like hannah montana or whatever isn't helped by piracy because the person performing it doesn't even make the music, they just read it into the microphone. real bands get inspiration from listening to TONS of music from other people, though. it helps them out. i guess in all forms of media, underground (not indie, necessarily) tends to benefit from the extra publicity from piracy.

Piracy's a clear sign that there's too much excess fat in the music, film and software industry. Piracy is most prevelant in countries where average wages are lowest, suggesting that piracy is a result of potential cutomers being unable to afford a desirable product. The prices of all of these forms of media hasn't dropped substantially even though the cost of production and distribution has. Through digital distribution, the role of most of the middlemen between the artist and the end-buyer is effectively defunct, and the artist should be able to sell direct to the customer and maintain at least as high a profit while cutting prices by at least 80%.
