First off, let me start by saying that the term "race" is rediculous. There are varying skin pigments and hair concentrations/make-ups based on location. We are all the same species and thusly...are all "equal".

This brings me to my point: How on Earth is it at all fair to maintain an equal ratio of different colors of people at the workplace? If you are the most qualified, you should get the job...end of story. Why do the less-deserving have a better chance at a career of their choosing based on minor genetic differences that they had no control over?

Don't even try to tell me that it is because of slavery...how many descendants of slave-owning families are still around? Not to mention that half of the Americans during the days of slave trade lived in the north and never bought or sold a human life. I know, personally, that my family came over from Poland right around the turn of the century, and never owned a slave...does this mean I am exempt from these employment rules?

What are you guys' takes on this? Don't hold back now!

I think it's horrible that the best candidate doesn't get the job. No wonder people in the US seem to only strive for mediocrity...there's no incentive to be the best.

We SHOULD be equal but folks are certainly not always treated that way.

Also equal opportunity employment laws that I'm aware of simply say you can't hire and fire in a discriminatory manner. No hard percentages are involved that I'm aware of.

I'm not sure if it falls under the same law, but I know that for state jobs where I live that even if a non-minority scores higher than a minority on lets say a state trooper test (I forget the name of the test) the minority will get it over the person scoring higher. To me that is messed up.

I wish I believed that the non-discriminatory laws were only for such things. I am, however, left to wonder why I had to check the "white" box every time I applied for a job.

Just make sure the employer isn't racist, affirmative action is unecessary.

IMO there is a social an economic impact to consider as well. Having a group or separate groups of people who identify with each other largely living in concentrated poverty is is not advantageous. It just breeds more poverty and hopelessness. Also of these places aren't just any old neighborhood just like yours or mine, the schools are asstastic, crime terrible. Dragging the folks we can out of there by various means is IMOa good idea.

The best candidate should get the job, in every case. I think that the section for race and/or sexual orientation should be left out. The former would be pretty obvious once the person starts/interviews for the job, and the latter isn't necessary for an employer to know, unless the person feels otherwise.
