A law might be passing where any video game with a significant amount of violence would be for 18 and up. The back of game cases would have a huge ass 18 covering a lot of space. If this law passes even Mario games might end up being for 18 and up because of the "violence". Your thoughts?

I can see how Mario games can be made for people age 18+ with its infinite psychoactive drug references, but I don't see the law passing.

Yes, this will prevent youngsters from getting the games because the parents never buy them and no child has friends with parents who would do such a thing. Heheheh..heh...

Ehh, I'm 19 so this doesn't apply to me but I still think slapping a big ugly 18 on the box (even though M games are 17+) is a futile move.

Well, I'm 29, so it doesn't affect me in the least, but I think it's wrong to assign an arbitrary age limit to any game that has any amount of violence to it. It defeats the point of having a rating system to begin wtih.

It's the equivilent of the Surgeon General smacking all cigarette packs with the "Cancer" label. Everybody knows violent video games aren't for children just as everyone knows cigarettes cause cancer. It's informative and helpful at best and symbolic and pointless at worse, but it's not going to hurt the video game industry any.

I wonder why this would even be considered a good mesure to take? I'm guessing this Yee guy is either what is clinically known as Jack-Thompson-crazy, or he has his own selfish motives.

That reminds me, what the hell is with sex being horrifying in video games as opposed to violence. To me, the logic goes like this:

Two people in bed: Not okay

Two people getting brutally stabbed in bed: Okay

I swear I can't wrap my head around how someone could follow this train of thought with a straight face.

It would change nothing. Kids would still get whatever game they wish.

I don't think the rating should be any bigger than it is now. It's already way bigger than MPAA ratings. Parents should take at least a bit of responsibility by taking some time to look at the rating.

Not really. There's movies with nudity (and even sex scenes) that are PG-13 but video games either get an M or AO rating for showing the same stuff.

My dad was laughing at that the other day. He thinks its funny how sex is worse than violence. Even though he still wont buy me a video game with sex in it. I'm lucky he never saw some scenes in Devil May Cry 4.

The saddest part of it all is that, in video games, the people doing it aren't even real. *sigh*

I think it's ridiculous. I'm 19 but is there something wrong with the ESRB? No. It's not the games we need to worry about, it's the parent or person buying it for them.

Raikoh_

I agree 100%. It's the parents at fault if the child is playing mature games, not the game itself.

It's a shame media has such a controlling power. They'll find any little thing like that GTA4 scandal, and stab down the industry entirely as a result.

I'm legal so it doesn't matter but I hope it won't affect the quality and content of these games. I wish there were more AO rated games for consoles though.

It's a huge waste of money (especially with the economic crisis) and out of all the other important things they could be spending the money on, they choose this?! Why pick on video games? What about TV, Movies, and other forms of entertainment that produce the same thing or worse? Kids can obtain anything they want from anywhere, whether they're 7 or 17, and it's not very hard at all in today's society. They already have a rating system in place and I think it's the best it's going to get. I work at a Game Stop and when kid's pick up over-age products, we have to tell the parent/guardian that the game is over the kid's age limit for the content in the game and explain to them what that content entails, but a lot of parents/guardians really just don't care, so how is this going to help? Anti-video gamers need to stop being so judgmental and do some factual research before they start making video games and gamers in general scapegoats for what parents/guardians should be doing.

Reid and Pelosi will undoubtedly say something along the lines of "Protecting our children from violent video game material will help in the prevention of school violence."

Wow you guys are lucky to have such a law.

In Australia, we don't even have an R18+ rating for games, it stops at MA (15+). Games deemed to have violence, drug use, sexual references etc that breech MA+ standards, are banned here.

We're the only industrialised nation that doesn't have an R18 rating for games, it's bloody pathetic!

I thought with the Democrats in power, bs like this wouldn't happen :( I guess both are at fault. Maximum age for anything should be 16 at most IMO.

Doesn't really effect me. However, I know that if I was under the age of 18, and they made it so that I couldn't play Mario, I would be pretty ticked.

Age ratings are a joke. Halo gets a 17+ rating when it looks like it's made for 10 year olds (no offence) and SSBB gets 13+. I mean... seriously? You may as well ban video games for anyone under 13
