Sadly you've got it completely backwards. It's theatrics, there's nothing serious about the image these days. Want to see artists who take themselves too seriously? Check out Alice Cooper, Lady Gaga, Yngwie Malmsteen, or Phil Anselmo - These artists take themselves far more seriously than any black metal artist in existence.
I love probably more than 50 metal bands from various genres. So narrowing down to the 10 best would be hard. So I'll go with the top-10 that I'm listening to currently (i.e. listening to them the most often).
Subgenre's aside. Pantera, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Mudvayne, 40 below summer, Death Angel to name very few. I don't really care for Metallica or Five finger buttpunch, they sound generic imo.

first of all , i said SOME of them . yes there also many of them who just love their music , and the artists you mentioned , I don't know who is lady gaga just heard her name some times , don't know a lot about Phil anselmo either , just heard him on pantera tracks . and I don't like Yngwie Malmsteen . but Alice cooper ? every time I saw that guy talking he was joking about everything , specially his performance and Music . he never took himself seriously .
As far as I know their genres include neo metal, the kind that's somehow combined with hip-hop.Anyway what's the real difference between metal and rock and who really cares

I've seen Alice Cooper dismiss interviews out of arrogance - I've certainly never seen any black metal musicians do that. Also, I mostly listen to black metal and I can't think of more than a handful of musicians that take themselves that seriously, but despite my limited knowledge of pop music I've seen tons of pop music celebrities exhibit ego's that you can spot from a mile away.

@kingcrimson24: I don't mean to keep talking about heavy metal, but you should know who Bathory is if you listen to black metal, as they're one of the first black metal bands. They created basically everything about the genre, from lo-fi recordings to the use of dark ambient tracks to also being one of the first viking metal bands. They're one of the few black metal bands I enjoy listening to and their self-titled debut is one of the heaviest albums I've ever heard and totally destroys anything by Slayer or Venom or any second wave black metal bands commonly found today–in my opinion of course. They are definitely worth a listen if you have the time.
