OT,

Another random thread. What is your view on watches? Do you treat is as a fashion statement or a genuine tool to tell the time? Do you care about the brand or will any watch that looks ok, be fine for you?

For me, I love watches and treat them as 70% fashion, 30% tool.

Yeah, but the expensive watches tend to be the good looking ones. I'm being very general here, but generally the more expensive the watch, the better it's looks.

The purpose of a watch is to tell the time, if you use it for anything else such as "fashion" then you're a tool.

Well i'm not a big fan of fashion, and wearing a watch as a fashion statement just seems a bit impractical given its usually under your sleeve.

I usually get the leather straps since the metal straps sort of pull at my hair. It just stings the hair around my hands.

For me, it's mostly something to tell the time with. It has to look nice, but I'll only own one at a time, rather alternating between several because of looks.

I normally wear T-Shirts, so a watch is pretty much anything anyone will notice apart from the T-Shirt itself, but I guess it depends on what you wear. :D

I used to wear a watch for practical and sentimental reasons. The watch I wore was given to me by my cousin in Canada the last time I saw him, which was 5 years ago. Now I have an iPhone, and the battery of that specific watch died, I don't wear them.

Well i think it also depends on the weather, unless you walk around in the rain with just a t-shirt on.

I know its summer but its actually raining where i am so it seems relevant.

Same as someone using a hat to block the sun? You fail.

Well using a hat to block the sun isn't wearing it for fashion is it? its a practical use, you benefit from wearing it hence the sun isn't in your eyes.

Same as the watch, you benefit from wearing it because you know the time.

Using said items as fashion statements is impractical because you're not using them for their intended purpose and you don't benefit from their use.

Mostly I consider them to be a fashion item, because they are truly obsolete now. I've only got 2 watches, a Digital Fossil watch that cost around $90, and a Tag Heuer I got as a gift when I graduated high-school that I have worn twice over the years. :P

I like watches, it took me a while to get used to wearing one but I can't do without it now. I use mine as a genuine tool to tell the time but it's still nice looking and it runs off sun light so never needs a new battery. It looks quite a bit like this:

Watches are utilitarian to me...I couldn't care less as to whether or not someone else liked or disliked my watch.

I'm the one using it, not them.

I used to wear them when I was little... Now I see them as an annoyance on my arm. Besides the looks, there is really no point to wearing them when you can pretty much get the time from anywhere you look. Especially when almost everyone has a cell phone...
