Which side do you pick to go fight on? Do you go to Europe and shoot the shit out of Hitler's little minions or to the Pacific to cap some dumbass Japanese banzai assholes?

I'd probably go to Europe. At least you don't have to deal with the heat and humidity of the Pacific. :P

Jee I dunno, freeze my ass off in France, or rot in the islands? I'll leave it off to the draft.

Europe. Wouldn't want to be stuck in a jungle with over a 1000 bugs crawling in my face while I sleep in a pool of mud and have water falling all over me regardless of cover, only to have to walk through the same jungle at 100 degrees on the next morning.

You could. (At the time, mind you, I'm not trying to be offensive) You would have to stay in the closet, which makes some of the strongest, patriotic soldiers.

I would not go to war because I don't like wars.

Also why bring back an event that has already happened? Most of the people who fought and killed in World War 2 are already dead and rested in peace now so why bring back a tragic event that already happened?

If I had a choice I would prefer Europe. Some of the things the Japanese did to POWs was brutal. My wife is Filipino and some of her family members still have problems with the Japanese to this day because of the things they did during their occupation of the Philippines.

Also, the people who are saying they would just dodge the draft don't seem to realize that those were different times. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, the shame you would have coming your way for running away wasn't worth it to most of the people who were scared and a medic who was against fighting earned the Medal of Honor despite not carrying a weapon.

It isn't like Vietnam where a lot of people were anti-war and you would get more respect going to jail for refusing induction than you would if you actually fought.

Europe all the way. It's pretty much Easy Mode thanks to the Soviets on the eastern front doing practically all of the work that led to Germany's defeat.

As for the Pacific Theater... No thank you. I'd rather not deal with tropical hellholes, kamikaze pilots, and even the slightest possibility of Operation Downfall occurring.

worlock77

Yeah. Units get assigned strategically, not based on where they'de rather go. I think the likelihood of going to Europe or Pacific also depended on which branch of the service someone was in. Army was more likely to fight in Europe, Marines and Navy in the Pacific, I think.

I'de rather go to Europe, I don't know if the fighting was any better or worse, but there was less tropical heat and mosquitoes. Also I think the Germans and Italians were mostly not as fanatical as the Japanese, and the civilians in Germany and Italy (particularly Sicily) were more welcoming to Allied troops than Japanese civilians.

while I'm sure that the Soviets contributed much more to the war, I don't think it actually matters to the soldiers who are actually fighting.

Europe.

I would have joined the Air Force though, so ultimately I don't think I would have cared.

Less flak over water, though, so maybe the Pacific theatre?

But on the other hand, if your plane crashes over water, then you parachute into the ocean. And a lot of the water in the pacific theater had sharks.

The Air Force wasn't formed until 1947. Before then all of the military's aircraft was a part of the Army. Also, during a draft a lot of people try to join what they assume will be the "easy" branches such as the Air Force or National Guard, making it much harder to get in versus any other time. To this day people criticize George W. Bush for joining the Air National Guard during Vietnam because it was much less likely he would deploy in it.

Erm, no they didn't

Yes, they did and it included German fighter pilots trying to defend the Reich against the Eighth Air Force. The Luftwaffe Over Germany, Defense of the Reich is a very informative book about how late the German fighter defenses were allowed to be formed and how ineffective they actually were and how obsolete the Bf 109 and Fw 190 really were even against the P-47 and even moreso against the bombers (even the 20mm cannon was fairly ineffective).

Living With Malaria In Europe is pretty informative too. One has to remember that even Italy and even Sicily are part of Europe.
