I've read the 8600GT is pretty weak for gaming (sometimes beat by a 7600GT), and I'm not likely to get Vista anytime soon, to get any DX10 benefit. However, I'll probably spend more time watching video than gaming, so I'm wondering if the GF8 series would automatically outperform the GF7 in that category, in WinXP.
Am I likely to get any significant performance boost over a 6800XT with an 8600GT? Particularly concerning Shader Model 3.0 games? I'm sure I would with the 7900GS.

7900. I just made a very similar decision and I got a 7900 GS XXX edition from XFX as apposed to a 8600 GT, the 7900 was cheaper too. I am happy with my decision and you would be too. I honestly don't know why people think the 8600 series is any good, its not (compared to the high end DX9 cards like a 7900 GS).

It has a more efficient video decoding engine (Purevideo 2), which helps offload the tasks of processing video from the processsor, which helps keep videos looking and playing better, since less information has to go from the graphics card to the processor and back.
