3dMark all about the money now? Any other real benchmark comparison tools?

I've been building and upgrading my own PC's for a long time. Ever since I can remember 3DMark was a great tool to compare your PC to others around the world. Haven't used it in a while, as I haven't upgraded in a while.

So I upgraded my PC this weekend to a 1TB 7200rpm hard drive, Phenom X2 550, 4GB of DDR2 1066. I already had a 8800 GTX. According to 3dMark my system ranks way lower than the "Common System". What?? So I check out this "common system" which features a $300 cpu and a $500 video card. Oh really futuremark? Oh, and did I mention the links next to it where you could buy it now? I could not view any other systems comparable to mine like you use to be able to. All about the money now, making you think your system sucks so you buy stuff through them. You suck futuremark.

So now that my rant is over, any real benchmark sites out there where people can use it and load up their systems for comparison like 3dmark used to be?

Thanks.

For a total system benchmark I don't know any others there are lots of cpu benchmarks like the valve particle test, dhrystone, etc. PC Mark is good but thats made by the same company that makes 3D Mark so ...

3Dmark relieson the videocard in the first place and while the 8800GTX isn't a bad card by any means, it's neverthelessover 2.5 years old and hardly considered top of the class anymore.

I still cannot see how my system is considered far below the "common system". For the record my 8800 GTX is still holding up great to the likes of Crysis and Age of Conan which I am playing heavily right now. Yep it's a little old but still doing the job for me and doing it well. I don't forsee a video card upgrade until the current top of the lines come down.

That's a wise way to see things. Why consider a card outdated or low-end if it still runs everything you chuck at it nicely?

It's probably considered low end because it's an old and discontinued model. As far as 3d/futuremark goes, I'd assume that the majority of the people using it have some pretty beasty set ups, so higher end machines are considered "common."

Exactly. People that have a generic HP or Acer PC, or even Dell desktops don't really use 3DMark as they just need it for general use. People who run it are ones who update their rig frequently, thus they do have i7s, ATI 48xx / NVIDIA 2xx, and 6GB of RAM. I too run an 8800GTX with a Q6600, and it serves my needs perfectly.

Agreed, if a 8800GTX was low end, then what would a 9500GT (among other better and worse) be then? Anyone who calls an 8800GTX low end, obviously does not know a huge amount about PC's, or at least hardware quality.

While it is of course not high end, for it's age it is very high end.

But back to the topic at hand, IMHO, 3DMark has been a joke for quite some time. It is neat to play with, but that's about it. I just hate the fact that ATI and Nvidia waste time tweaking drivers for 3DMark, when there are better things, again just my opinion.

Well times have changed technology has gotten better and now you can max out games for less $. I paid $200 for a 7600GT (middle end card at the time 2006) and now for $150 or less you can get a HD4870/9800GTX+. So low end now actually refers more to the price $150 or less is low.

HD 4870 is the best low end card.

Not really low end derives from the performance achieved, an 8800gtx is still a strong card, and is around the same speed as a 4850. Since the 8800gtx released, graphics cards haven't changed that much, sure their prices has, but performance, not so much.

So performance has nothing to do with high end to low end?

So if someone sold me a 4870X2 for $150, it will be low end???? And if I was dumb enough to buy a 9400 GS for $300 it would be high end??? That is just stupid. Just like saying a 8800GTX is low end.

But you did not answer the big question, if a 8800 GTX is low end, then what is a 9500 GT?

An 8800GTX is basically a 9800GTX+ which means its only $150. A 9500GT is mainstream.

Futuremark is a COMPANY.

3Dmark is a PRODUCT.

Of COURSE it's about money. It's always been about money.

I have no problem with it being about money when integrity plays a part in it all. My problem is where you used to be able to get an honest comparison out of 3DMark now it is just a tool to con you into thinking your system sucks so you buy new stuff from them. They use to market the software itself, now they have mutated into usingthe software tojedi mind trick you into buying more hardware through them. Big difference.
