my current 6800 is a 256MB vid card, it came with my Dell PC. This 8600 im contemplating about buying has the same amount of RAM. i was very easily able to most games on max( q4, bf2, FEAR...etc) minus AA though, that really made my frames eat dirt. Except COD2s DX9 which averaged 15-20 fps in some areas....so will i see a good improvement in that, and will be i able to play stalker with the second lighintg option? cuz i honestly cant get a playable framerate unless i set it to static lighting.( though i can put everything else on maximum though)

If you are going for 8600 gts, why not just get the 1950 xt or a pro. Yea the X1950PRO would be a better upgrade.

Get a 8600GT,there's a somewhat small performance hit (if you pick up a OCed version) for much less than a 8600GTS,but they're both better than your 6800,it really depends on how much you want to spend,plus the 8600GT can be OC'ed so it'll be close to the 8600GTS if not surpassing it.
It's impossible for an 8600GT to surpass an 8600GTS, as the GTS features much higher shader clock speeds.. plus the 8600GT is limited by the lack of a 6-pin PCI-e connector so it's not possible to hit GTS clock speeds.

Ever heard of Volt-modding? plus you can just OC the core much more than the memory,so even if it doesn't surpass the GTS,it still comes pretty damn close.
It is possible for a overclocked 8600gt to surpass a stock 8600gts, if you use volt mods on both gt and gts they max out at the same level. shader speeds can also be overclocked on the gt past stock gts speed.
I just did the very upgrade in question and I'm blown away. Took advantage of the Circuit City rebate deal this week, and a $40 off moving coupon (for an 8600GTS EVGA). I ended up getting the 8600GTS for about $130. You can't beat that.
The nice thing is you can use their step-up program to nab a high end 8800 soon.

Yea the X1950PRO is a hungry card. My friend has a 7900GS running on a 300w that would work.

i saw that card on their website as well, it looked very tempting, i cant decide between it and the XFX one i found on newegg
