i dont get it, didnt AMD come up with the number only naming sceme to make buying there cards less confusing? now they just screwed that up with the 6870. why not just name it the 6770, or the 5780? pointless.

HD5780 makes no sense, this is a new architecture sporting new features it is a HD6xxx.

The only good explanation is that they want to confuse us. ;)

HD6770 would be a better name that would more correctly indicate the performance for us hardware geeks but we have already looked at the benchmarks and know what to buy no matter what the name is, for average joe it don't matter either as the higher number (per serie) still tells what the better card is.

the 6870 was origionally going to be the cayman but then they would have more rebadging. this way they rebadge 2 cards... rather than like all the 5000 line flushed out with 5 new cards. now they have 7 new cards plus 2 refreshed cards.

so they could go back if you wanted.. this way you get another hd 2000 line :P

Its just rebranding, it will only be for this transition. Hopefully they will keep the same convention afterwards.

There's no re-branding going on yet. They're just re-arranging. (re-branding is putting a new sticker on a old product, that isn't the case with HD68x0)

I wrote a blog about the ridiculous naming schemes not too long ago. You might enjoy it :P.

I agree that the 6870 should have been the 6770 or the 6830 (unless that's already designated for another card). The Cayman-based cards should be the 6850/6870. Instead they made it confusing.

Personally I dont know why they need so many numbers :P but partly maybe someone though "oh everyone who has a 5870 will buy this 6870". Maybe they thought the 5770 was being looked down upon so the 68xx numbers might hold up better as the 8 is higher than 7? Personally I like this new system more, it makes sense to me to not have a separate tier just for one dual gpu card.

Probably because the 6870 is in-between the 5850 and 5870. If you had a 4000 series, like I did, its a great upgrade.

Yeah, there's a difference of around $100 in price between the two and they're nearly equal, plus the 6870 is better with DX11.

Meh. Its a difference of one number. If you know what you are talking about it wont make any difference.

6830 = barts LE

anyway their doing this because the juniper is the only rebrand versus rebranding the whole lineup which would results in 5-6 new cards. now they have 7 as stated and cayman isnt so new.

you see (see wzklp for a full explanation) the caymanpro and xt are actually the true cypress pro and xt we never got. they held them back as they deemed them too powerful to release now.. it left them without a ahnd to play for the refresh and then the 580 could ahve been that mcuh mroe of a beast on impusle from nvidia.

they did it to dodge another hd 2000 fiasco this time though the 2000's wouldnt have been rebadges.

it would have also ment them taking longer to make them.

so they scaled it down and neutered it to cut costs, time and give them something while we waited on the 28nm's to arrive.

and since they were technically evergreen's they couldnt uss the label 5930 and 5950.. thatd be confusing and the barts which they had sitting there was deemed worthy to work in the 5800's place so we have a good replacement card at their bracket and a late card we hid so well no one was the wiser.

since the 6990 was going to be the dual card anyway and since the barts were going to replace the 5830 anyway. they elevated the barts to full 6800 status kept juniper and then simply wiped the 6970 antillies dual card from the record and slammed in the two cayman's (or full cypress)

i say eys its confusing but it is a necissary evil..

save time & money = out sooner = more time for you to grab market before competition can coutner = and in this case: roadwork done for refresh line

it was the above or they have a super card in the 480 vs 5800 scenario.. have nothing for the refresh and get pwned by the next 8800-like god card :P

as nice as it would have been to make a enw breakwater in the graphics market.. they would much rather have them make it over nvidia

If you want to get picky, there is re branding since theyre droping the ATI label to bring the graphics under the AMD umbrella. I probably should have phrased it differently, AMD are just overhauling the old naming convention.

When you think about it, its a good naming scheme. They are meant to confuse people, becausing from a marketing standpoint, they getmore money for a cheaper product.
