Alright guys, I have a samsung 22" 1680x1050 monitor that I have split between my ps3 and my macbook pro. The ps3 is connected via hdmi-dvi cabling and the ps3 is set to do 720p. All of my games look like someone smeared vaseline on them, especially GTA4. The only game where I haven't seen this problem is wipeout HD but, still. When I set it to 1080p, the screen tries to go up to 1680x1050 and *some* games look marginally better, but overall my video quality is blurry beyond reason. 1080i has an extremely blurry XMB so I figured the games would look even worse. Anyone have any tips or info?

Something's wrong, that's for sure. The image should be excellent if you're using compontent or VGA, and damn near perfect if you're using HDMI or DVI. I don't know, make sure you check your PS3 settings, as well as your TV's setting. I'm sure it's the TV.

Put monitor on 60 Hz Refresh rate.

Maybe that will help.

It's because your not running the native resolution of the monitor, your monitor has to scale every source except when hooked up to a computer as that will run at 1680x1050. All fixed panel displays look there best when they are fed the native resolution of the display. And of course there is a difference in what kind of scaler it has built in, some are better than others.

1080p = 1920x1080 resolution

Your monitor = 1680x1050 resolution

Your screen doesn't have enough pixels to display all the pixels that the PS3 is trying to send data for. Your monitor has to crunch the image down to fit. You loose pixels and get a fuzzy image. It's totally normal that the image gets distorted when trying to scale an image up or down in resolution size.

Nothing you can really do about it other then get a 1080p TV to connect it to. Getting a higher resolution PC monitor will not really do much to fix the fuziness since the next step up in resolution for them would be 1920x1200 and would still have some kind of resolution scaling going on. It would be better, but still not as good as a native 1080p screen.

Alright, thanks guys. I hooked it up to my roommates 37" insignia and the games had pop and flash I have never seen before. I almost cried I was so excited and disappointed at the same time. Grrrrr I don't have money for a TV but I also can't stand the image on this at ALL. Does the 216bw have some way of forcing the screen to scale the image to true size? I know nvidia controllers in windows can, but I was wondeirng if the monitor itself could.

The real problem is 16x9 video games are being scaled to 16x10.
