Thanks Gummi!
But, why does the 7770 have less SPU's than the 6770?
Edit: Wait wut, 2 years later and they can't even released an under $160 card to top a GTX 460?
Meh, review says AMD is their own enemy with the 6850 vs 7770 (referring to pricing)
I don't see a problem with that. They make money either way.
[QUOTE="GummiRaccoon"]
remember this is a 5770/5750 replacement.
kaitanuvax
So why isn't it priced as such...
Did you miss the part where they are priced identically to the 5770/5750 when they were released?
Price/performance didn't really go up that much, but performance/watt went way up.
And historically performance/watt comes with a price premium. low wattage processors cost more than equally performance parts, etc etc
techpowerup's review puts a 7770 well within range of an hd 5850
and at higher resolutions it dropped a 560 ti on its face in crysis 2
and then in bf3 at high resolutions it beat the 6870 and came within fractions of fps to a 560
granted many times it sits next to its 6850 cousin but when she gets going look out. i believe she lacks a proper driver.. id wait till we see that
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7770_DirectCU/ and when you overclock her the 7770's poorerest preformance jumps a good sum of fps to meet my current card the hd 5830
i say wait for a stable driver.. check again in 30 days when the 7800's launch. i expect noticeable improvements.
Read the guru3d review. I have to say I'm unimpressed. The 7770 barely catches the 460 1gb in most games, and in some games it even loses to the 460 768mb. The 7750 is almost the same as a 5770/6770. Now, the 7770 at 160$ is just no match for the 6850 and the 460 768/1gb. While the 7750 at 110$ makes no sense when the 5770/6770 can be found for as low as 90$ for the same performance.
The super-low cosumption is truly a feat, and they would make excellent HTPC cards, but at those prices they don't make any sense, not against Nvidia's lineup, but even against the 6xxx series cards.
what an utter utter dissapointment the 7750 at best matches the 6770 and 7770 at best the 6850 at nearly 6850 and 6870 prices.
I've just read the HD 7770 review at hardwaresecrets.com and only in Deus EX Human Evolution did it outperform 460 1GB and 6850 (they only tested at 1200p). Still, it it's the only one of those 3 cards that my PSU can handle, so I guess it'll do.:D
The 7770 unimpressed me ( at that price point ). Drop it to $120-130 and we are talking for a good product ( the only think it has its power draw )
The 7750 though seems to be a great card for HTPC builders and for people with crappy PSU's since it only consumes 55W and it almost mathces a gtx550ti in performance
Why does the 7770 jump around so much in benchmarks :c is it just bad drivers so far or just certain engines relying on certain things that it does well...like in that techpowerup review it destroys in crysis 2 for some reason.CosmoKing7717bit of both.. but more of the drivers fault than the games.
The 6870 is screaming "BUY ME!" The 7770 costs just as much on newegg if you take into account the MIRs for the 6870. So it underperforms and costs just as much. Seems like the only reason to get these is for power consumption reasons. I'm excited to see what the 7870-7850 can do.

The 7970 wasn't priced identically to the 6970, yet it was the successor to the 6970.
Ionyx, why does the 7770 have 640 SPU's? And if it did have 800 like the 6770 would it be faster than a 6870 because of improved architexture?
http://hexus.net/tech/news/graphics/34657-amd-roadmap-hints-five-new-radeon-hd-7000-series-gpus/
The slide proves that AMD never intended for the 7750/7770 to take over for the 6850/6870
It looks like they are phasing out the lowest end AIB segment in favor of APUs
So maybe
APU < x7xx series < x8xx series < x9xx series

You can't rely on those guys, look at the table below. They had bogus info about Cape Verde.

Don't be dense, they priced the 79xx series the way they did because of the price of the 580. I can guarantee you that once the 6xx series debuts the 79xx will drop significantly in price.

That slide they got from someone else and the table below was clearly marked as their own speculation. There is no relying involved in speculating.

You saythey priced the 7970 highbecause it was much better than the competiton. Soplease enlighten me because I'm so dense, why is the 7770 priced high when it ISN'T much better than the competition?
I don't understand buying a high performance graphics card but making sure it uses as few watts as possible.
Isn't that like buying a Porsche, but requesting one that uses regular unleaded gas instead of premium?

77xx is not high end, it's lower mid range. And power consumption is an issue for some people, as well as the size (usually the more power they consume the bigger they are).

The price isn't just performance related, it is also power consumption related. Hypothetically If the 7770 and 6850 were exactly the same performance wise, but the 7770 used 30% less power the 7770 will cost you more because it offers a benefit to a wider range of people. Not only that, the cost of ownership of the 7770 will be less than the 6850 over the entire life of the card.
That's like asking why if 2 cars were equally equipped and both have 100 horsepower why would the one that gets 40mpg cost more than the one that gets 30mpg.
Most of the price difference between the 7770 and 6850 are via mail in rebates. The reason that manufacturers use mail in rebates is because most consumers do not bother sending their rebates in.
Furthermore this is the debut price, and there will be people that buy them because of the check boxes (pci-e 3.0, GCN, 7xxx, 1GHz, Low power) and once sales slow you will see prices drop, most likely to below current 6850 levels.
AMD is in the business of making money, not good feelings, they will sell the 7770s at the highest price they can for as long as they can. When units stop moving the price will drop, and I already see one of the 7770s out of stock on newegg.
Simple economics.

I would also like to note that if they priced it too low, they would screw over a lot of retailers and themselves by creating a ton of overstocked 6800 series cards. If someone doesnt have a PSU capable of running 6850 then they really should get a new PSU before getting a gaming GPU.
These are desktop GPUs not mobile, power consumption matters but lets not blow this out of proportion as if every watt saved is going to make the world a better place.

lol I feel sad for anyone who thinks the power consumption of their computer is going to have any impact on the world. :lol:Price is dictated by performance mainly, not power efficiency. All you have to do is look at Nvidia for proof.
I agree that the debut price is not indicate of its long term price tag but I still find it funny that AMD thinks it can get cute with it.

7770 gets 100% scaling in at least 2 of those games, while others only give it like 6 fps more.

The collective intelligence of our race, is absolutely way below the average IQ. "I'm not going to effect things that much." Well if everyone thinks that way, then nothing is going to change, but if everyone thinks the opposite, then see what happens.

Probably very close, the crossfire bridge also acts as a bandwidth increase IIRC.

I don't know why, but most 970 boards don't offer x8/x8 cf, even though that chip officially supports it. Guess x16/x4 will have to do.
[QUOTE="GummiRaccoon"]
You clearly just aren't getting it.
kaitanuvax
k. because everyone has to agree with you right?
It has nothing to do with people needing to agree with me, but you are very clearly ignorant of economic concepts and business practices. You are looking at prices from the most simplistic point of view there is (More performance = more price) but it is much much more complex than that and there is also power consumption, heat, noise, crossfire scaling, new features, better idling, the marketing check boxes (1 GHz, 7 series vs 6 series) etc.
It's not them "being cute" it is them being a company that is attempting to make a profit because that is how companies work.
When you buy a car, do you only look at the horsepower?
