in the world of nVidia, if you intend to do any gaming other then web based games, i always think the *600 /*700 card is the better bet over the *500 and below cards. Yes the price is generally substantially higher, but in proportion to the performance boost i beleive its worth it. Yes, the 8500 will probably do you pretty good right now, but it will quickly become obsolete. spending the extra $100 now on the 8600 means you wont have to worry about the card performing poorly for twice as long as if you had bought the 8500. I'd say fork over the extra dough to step up a notch, as i said i tend to find the *600 cards perform very well, i think its worth the extra initial cost for the longevity of the card.

the 8500 bairly runs as well as a 7600...

if you want a casual gaming experience head to the 8600 as it is powerful enough to handle the curent games as well as some future ones without having to kill every special graphical feature for FPS.

I don't see what's wrong with an 8500 for casual gaming, but what games do you want to play and at what resolutions? Yes, its only as good as a 7600, but 7600s are not that bad.

If the 8600GT is out of your range, go for a 7600GT.

The 8500GT is rubbish, and should only be used in the HTPC space.

I am bulding a comp for my dad and went on the site of the store where I get all my parts and they have a prebuilt system with pretty much all of the parts I want. I am Just questioning the video card. It is a nvidia 8600 GT.

Other Parts Include,2gb ram(PC2-6400), intel core 2 duo E6600, antec 900 gaming case. The price is 1379 cad.

Is the video card good, my dad mainly wants to be able to play the flight sim X on it or should go for an 8800.

Anything less than a 7600GT/8600GT is a POS.

You could look at x2000 series too because they are cheaper than 8500-8600 nvidia cards

I checked newegg, the HD 2600XT is much more cash than a 8600GT and most of the time its outperformed by it.

GordoMIM

You can play Flight sim X on max 1280x1024 with a 8600gt but only at 23fps, maybe overclocked you might be able to get more I haven't tried that yet.
