Hey will 2 8800gts 640mb out perform a single 8800ultra ? , i no that 2 8800gts sli cost £140 more here in Uk than buying a single Ultra so is it worth getting the 2 sli`ed or a single ultra ? also what 3dmarks 06 score shuld u expect with it i.e. sm 2 and 3 etc.

Also Can a 700w Psu with these 12v rails run 2 8800gtx/Ultra sli ? +12v1= 16a, +12v2=25a, +12v3=17a as ihave seen people running it on 600w psu`s just so long as they have the 12v rails to back it up, also will this bottleneck my e6600 and if it does how badly ?

i might be wrong but i think 8800gts sli will beat 1 8800 ultra or a gtx. but if u dont have themoney to buy the 2 8800gts i would recommend 8800gtx coz i think its worth the money while on the other hand u have 8800 ultra which is a good card but its really overpriced for the performance it gives.

I know i read an article with some benchmarks saying that the sli solution comes close to outperforming a gtx or ultra but still is only marginally less. IMO dont bust your money out for a sli solution and instead stick with a single gpu such as a gtx. Anyways you would have to spend more money for a psu that could power two gts'. Ill edit my post whenever i can find those benchmarks.

Edit

Alright i take my post back. Seems like gamespot did that article not to long agoand i see that bars are higher with 2 gts' than a single ultra. Heres a link to the article if your to lazy to find the article yourself. Click here.

I just faced this same question myself. I did some searching and I did find some articles which supported the fact that 2 GTS's will outperform a single GTX (didn't look at much for the Ultras). Here's one such link and please remember that this test was done on a 680i board.

http://www.hothardware.com/articles/GeForce_8800_GTX_and_GTS_SLI_Performance_Update/?page=2

My situation might be a little different than yours but I went with a single GTXafter the following thought process:

  • I have a 680i mobo so that second slot isx16.I do have the optimal SLi setup so I could buy 2 GTS's and run them at their full Sli potential, but...
  • 2 640mb GTS's cost more initially
  • Commiting to 2 cards now means that any upgrade in the future will most likely mean getting rid of the GTS's in favor of something else -- wasting money in the transaction. I could buy a single GTX now, for less money, and have the ability to add a second somewhere down the road.
  • The single GTX, in a respectable system, will run just about anything nowwith enough quality and framerate.
  • I have accepted the fact a second GTX willproabably overwhelm my PSU which means I will have to replace it tomake the upgrade.

Now this is with the GTX in mind. As far as I know, the Ultra isn'tdrastically more powerful so this infoshould still be relevant to your question.

ok thanks guys, i see in some tests though the 2 gts are only marginally faster and others its slower but i mean if a gtx and an ultra can stand up to 2 gpus thats ace lol, an like boom sed if you i get 2 gts ill spend more buying them and replacing them compared to an ultra or gtx, an if i ever needed to i could just get another ultra which would beat sli gts lol, i got told my psu should run 2 ultras in sli but dont know what you guys think ?

i know that the Ultra is pricey to say the least but i can buy a 8800gtx acs3 which is £387 or an ultra £400 which has more bandwidth and higher speeds

Oh i just found out something as well that i didnt know , some games dont support sli lol ive never ran into a game that hasnt but... that would suck if you had 2cards instead of 1

A GTS is the best overclocker around, it doesn't take much to clock it so it's up to par with the gtx. Of course it's missing a few things here & there, but you won't be able to notice it anyway.
