How long will the 8800GTS 640 MB run games maxed out at 1280*1024. I want to build a new pc and was looking at this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130071&CMP=EMC-IGNEFL032207&ATT=N82E16814130071

or

this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130072.

Is the second one overkill at the resolution?

The GTS will last you 2-3 years, and the GTX is kinda overkill at that resolution.

If DX10 runs equally well or better than DX9 games on it...we should be in for a few years of solid gaming at least ;)

You can get 2 years with medium settings,4 years for low settings if the games actually still support dx10.

Dx 10 will most likely be replaced within 2 1/2 years.

Since december 2002 according to wikipedia althought DX9.0c was a fairly big improvement, didn't that bring in SM3.0? Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

SM 3.0 came when the GeForce 6 cards came out.

Since graphic technology doubles every 1.5 years... I'd say 1.5 years max or close to max, 3 years med/low. It will be supported for a very long time though.
