X2900XT has 64 Shader processors 8800GTX has 128 Shader Processors & they were faster than X2900XT Shader processors.

64 when they're in groups of five, but 320 altogether. They're little bit more tricky to program for than NVIDIAs straight out method, but if done right, yeilds high performance.

Anyway, depends on how much you're willing to spend. Also, make sure your PSU has enough juice to power both of these cards!

I agree with wesker depends on the money you wanna spend, i have been using a evga 8800gtx since last november had to RMA it back 3 weeks ago just got the replacemnet, they replaced it with a new one suprisingly, the main thing to sonsider is the company you get it from, customer support is my main concern just my opinion

x2900xt, better price to performance ratio IMO. Keep in mind the 2900 just released and the drivers wont be the best (just like the 8800 when it released) but after a few driver releases you will see the 2900 perform exceptionally well :)

That is the third option. :D  If you have the money, go for the 8800GTX.  If your on a budget, get the 2900XT.

The fact that the 8800gtx is as fast or faster than 2 x2900's in some tests should be good enough evidence.

Get the HD 2950 XT/XTX, when that comes out. That will definitely trump the 8800 GTX, though I have a feeling by the time that comes out, Nvidia has something ready by then.

True I have ATI and it does get on my nerves hence nvidia seems to be the preffered card in all of the games.

Do keep in mind that the HD x2900xt is only the price of a 8800 GTS 640MB... The GTX is way dearer...

Only because Nvidia pays a lot of money to the devs and on equipment, to get their name in the game.

Recommending a nonexistent (as of now) product is a bit pointless, no? :P

That said, the 8800GTX beats the HD 2900XT by around 10-30% except in Rainbow Six Vegas, where the 2900XT wins by about 2% or something.

The 8800GTX also beats the 2900XT by quite a margin in two (read: the only ones available) DX10 benchmarks.

It's very possible that driver problems are holding the 2900XT back though.

Don't expect your own GTX to see that sort of performance as those DX10 benches...
Nvidia quickly made those drivers to secretly send to certain reviewers that had those DX10 benches.

now that's why I hate the intraweb, you can't catch the subtle sarcasm.... oh wait, I had not subtle indicators  but to answer the question seriously, if you are an insane overclocker (see: Xtremesystem folks) the drawback is the HD 2900 XT is too hot for liquid nitrogen at a certain point!! For the typical user, if its pertinent to get top performance right at this very instant, no doubt the 8800 gtx. If you are willing to give the HD 2900 XT drivers a chance, we might be surprised by what it can yield, but don't hold that against me!

Hmm. Oddly enough, I'm playing the Lost Planet DX10 demo and getting 48 and 44 fps in the two tests, which is quite in line with these numbers...

By the way, those 'secret' 158.42/43 drivers have just been released officially.

 Oh. My. God.

Hope the 65nm R600 kicks things up a notch though. Lack of competition is never good for us poor buyers.

I wish either NV/ATI would make a midrange card with 256-bit memory. The 8600GTS/GT is kinda underwhelming.

its not gonna make much difference.... what's in order is to have half of the 8800 GTX sp amount = 64 + 256 bit memory, not the current 128 + 32 sp on the card, but I can imagine this will eat through 8800 gts 320 and 640 sales, alot of people seem to be bumping up to at least the 8800 gts 320 because of its awesome price.

8800GTS 320 price is awesome indeed.

What happened to that 8800GS card mentioned in one of the release notes for a previous driver version? The release notes for 158.43 drivers no longer have it listed.

Proven to be fake, Nvidia said its just a typo in their release notes in one of the drivers... 8800 GS supposed to be 8800 GTS.

well do not worry because ati will also be releasing its rv670. it will be called the hd 2900pro. and will only have a slower clcok than the 2900xt.

Awww. The gap between 8600GTS and 8800GTS is just way to wide not to fill it with something though.

Maybe DAAMIT would push out something along the lines of an HD 2900 Pro/XL/GT/GTO/GTO2/whatever.

They both have their obvious advantages at the moment... price vs performance... But expect the XT's performance to increase a good bit with future driver releases. And you can voltmod the XT via software, which is nice if you're uncomfortable with soldering...

price gap is manageable though, at least the 8800 gts 320 mb version! If you can spare more cash, easily, just bump up to the 8800 gts, now that they are at a crazy price point.
