My 8600GT runs perfect on my 300W Power supply. If Will I have to upgrade to get the 9600?Atomicfireball

Depends on the PSU. Remember , total watts is not the most important thing. The Rails are.

The 8600GT consumes much less power than the 9600GT.

Most likely not,you can grab a Antec Earthwatts 500W for very cheap which can power pretty much anything below a 8800GTX/Ultra or HD 2900XT/HD 3870 X2.

And come to think of it,your quad core isn't exactly power-friendly,so a 9600GT with a 300W PSU is definitely out of the question.

Well, 500W would probably be enough if you don't have a bunch of harddrives or insane overclocks or anything, but if you're going to be spending that much money on a graphics card, why skimp out on the power supply unit?

A cheap Seasonic/FSP/Cooler Master 430w unit is all you'll need for that 9600GT (as well as the rest of your system).

The official card specs say it draws around 95W. My 400W psu supplies only 16A on its 12V rail. But 16x12=192W. So shud be enuf for this card, right? I've got a E6300,a single hdd and dvd-writer.Flackraze

You're forgetting other components that feed off of the +12V rail, such as the CPU, HDD's and disc drives.

It is good to have expensive good quality PSU's but it is NOT necessary by any means if you dont have the money.

So if you are on a budget then the coolermaster 460W PSU will do you just fine.

Now if you are willing to fork out for a quality PSU than i would recomend the corsair VX550 watt.And this PSU will almost certainly handle your next upgrade as well.

And i would personally highly recomend you to not run the 9600GT on the 300W.

Well its hard to get around 95W extra for the video card only on a 300W supply, especially if you have a quad-core CPU etc.

But reviews suggest that a system with 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo ,2 GB ram, single HDD etc. and the 9600gt draws about 190-200W total under full load. So, if a PSU can handle that coolly, I think it shud be stuck with. But of course, to be on the safer side, get as good a PSU as you can.

I thought i read somewhere that the 9600 was being produced with less transisters so it could run off less power than the 8600?xanderenigma

Not only does it have significantly more transistors (how else could performance increase so much), but it also consumes quite lot more power.

What was said earlier was important. Watts does matter, but for the gpu its more about the Amps on the 12v rail.

Some people told me that my psu wouldnt run my system, and i run a single gpy, being a 8800gt. It is a slightly Oc'ed system, the cpu being onlt 20% OC, and the gpu is slowly getting oc'ed but I knew better.

The fact that my psu is 560watts only says so much. However its a single 12v rail design, with 38amps on that single 12v rail. It can run SLI 8800GT's and can run the 3870x2 rather easily.

Its the amps. Without the amps, or running borderline, you get hiccups and BSOD, system lockups, and total shutdowns. You shouldnt run your psu to the wall, as if it blows there is the chance it takes some other parts with it to HELL.
