i just saw that the 9800 GTX is 179.00 However, i was going to get another 8800 GT and run two in SLI.

So are 2 8800GTs better than 1 9800 GTX?

if your playing at anything below 1920x1200 then 1 9800GTX would be better, but if you game on a that res or above go for SLI'd 8800GTs

SLI 8800GTs will offer better framerates. I prefer a single card setup myself.

I'd hold out...GTX 280 has dropped to $449 on newegg. GTX 260 is $269! Why buy old technology???

8800GTS $179 x 2 = $358

9800 GTX = $200

GTX 260 = $269 with mail in rebate on newegg

Wait another month or two and GTX 280 will dropp to $380.00 or so. Unless you're itching to get a card then I'd do the 9800GTX because if you've got $350.00 to drop, then save an extra $100 for an awesome card.

Get the 9800GTX+ from evga.com and preorder it for 199.00. It beats the 4850 and the 9800GTX very well.

Edit* It doesn't beat them very well, but for 199 it's enough to justify the premium over the 4850.

Why spend another 200-300 on new "tech" when that old "tech" in sli perform as fast or faster for under $180, when he already has a 8800GT.

Eh...I'd still go GTX 260 for $269.00 over the 8800GT SLi

Would be nice to see bench marks on it

I hope you're talking about SLI. But since an 8800GT is going for about 130 these days it's a good idea.

Ok...another thought...GTX 260 (EVGA) then use their software to overclock the snot out of it. I'm sure it will outrun two stock 8800GT's, good luck overclocking in SLi mode.

the 9800 GTX is 179 on TD

but I already have one 8800GT and i can get another for 150. So if i can spend 150 instead of 179 and get better performance, that makes the most sense.

really??? well since i alrady have one and an SLI mobo, then it would be 150 bucks(tigerdirect) to have one of the most powerful vid card setups.

The 9800 GTX+ performs 8-10% better than the 9800 GTX I believe. But you're hard pressed to find it anywhere other than the evga website. You could wait on it. But the 8800GT is damn cheap, maybe under 130 on newegg. Unless you live in Canada. Like me. Then that sucks.

I think it would be close GTX260 192 Processor Cores vs. 8800GTSLi 224...but GTX is on 45nm tech and more efficient plus like I said OVERCLOCK!

SLI is there for those who game at high res', if hes at a lower res he may not see increase in performance. the amount of times ive heard 'ive SLI'd but theres hardly any difference is because of this.

SO?

I know all that but the difference between a single 9800GTX and 8800GT is such that there is absolutely no way the 9800GTX would outperform 8800GT SLI at any res.

Oh maybe at 8x6 with no AA the GTX will outperform.

'so?', you buy a card and you see little performance increase..increased heat, noise and electricity bill..but its all right that extra 5FPS was worth it...to TC the best thing to do is to buy a single slot card on the level of a GTX 260 or HD 3870.

You're also forgetting that the GTX 260 & 280 just came out...drivers will improve. 9800 series is a waste, it's just a souped up 8 series card.

Well ok I thought you were saying that 9800GTX will outperform 8800GT SLI at lower res but you were trying to say that a 9800GTX is a better "buy" for lower res than 19x12 than 8800GT SLI.I totally agree with you on that BUT this thread was asking what is better in performance and you probably missed out the fact that the TC has one 8800GT already. In that case if he needs more performance than Sling 8800GT is easily the better buy.

Hey SPYBOT...don't forget he's gonna have to upgrade is power supply too. I doubt he's gonna have a PSU capable of SLi'ing if he's only packin' an 8800GTs right now. So something else to think about...decent PSU that's SLi capable is another $150.00 so now he's pushin a price tag of about $350.00 or maybe if he's lucky $300.00 so now what's the best option?

To not upgrade at all.

$100 will buy you the corsair TX 650W more than enough for 8800GT SLI.So total is $250 which wont buy you a better single card than 8800GT SLI.Heck 8800GT SLI can even beat the GTX 280 so a better single doesnt even exist.
