If you were clever enough not to post same topic twice in row, you'd probably know which card to get.
However, all you had to do is some search for one of those cards review when they are probably compared to each other. If you are looking to the best performer without any other factors in mind (Maybe future SLI/Crossfire) then go with ATI 4870

Your friend sounds biased at best, and stupid at worst. Company loyalty is silly, and has no place in PC hardware. It's all about your budget and the exact model you're looking at, and given your budget and the cards you're looking at, ATI is the way to go. ATI offers superior performance in most instances, especially when AA is enabled and DirectX 10 comes into play.

Bit-Tech

Extremetech

Xbitlabs

There's proof - sure, the ATI cards run rather hot, but you can easily tweak the fans to run faster and keep the cards much cooler.

I'm still running most games at high/medium with a bit of AA at 16x10 with an X1900XT. The HD4850 should be able to do the same thing for two years, I should think.

4850 total waste is you got a gtx9800, i can 100% prove it will not be any better but most likely 4850 will be worse than gtx 9800. get 4870, it isnt exspencive, only 150quid and that without haggling. if you get 4850 you wont be able to play anything above 1200res i have found out. get 4870 no question

i have no experience with the new ATI cards but i have 2x 9800gtx and I can say that you will certainly not be disappointed if you get a 9800gtx. I had a single card for about a month and was estatic. I got my second card and about **** my pants. Aside from crysis ( which still plays great on all high ) any other game you throw at it will run fantastic with a single card.

No one is saying that 9800GTX is weak card or 4850 is going to outperform it 50%.. But in most cases, 4850 was better in away or another and 4870 kicked the hell out of 9800GTX+
