Everyone here will say 4870 X2 i bet.

I say that the 4870 X2 is a better overall card in terms of performance. But price wise the GX2 is better. If you can afford a 4870 X2 then get one of those.

If you need the absolute best performance possible on a single-slot card, get the HD4870 X2.

If you have two PCI-Express slots, however, get the 9800GX2, as that'll give you a lot better performance instead.

The 9800GX2 is actually faster than the GTX 280, but it is still slower than the 4870X2

4870x2 takes the cake, too bad I only have the 4870 :(. It's all good though, it's still good bang for buck.

A single HD4870 should be more than enough.

Unless you're planning on playing on exorbitantly-high resolutions, you won't need a X2 card, nor a CrossFire/SLi setup.

One 4870 can max out any game that's currently available @ 1080p with AA and AF with no problem (with the obvious exception of Crysis), and there don't seem to be many graphically-intensive games coming out soon, besides Far Cry 2. But then again, if it can run Crysis at a pefect framerate, FC2 won't be a problem.

Scaling past two cards is horrible, minimal difference.

So up to about 16x10, the 9800gx2 is almost as good as the 4870x2, but the 9800gx2 beats the 4870x2 in crysis.

After 19x12+ resolutions, the difference is greater, and the 4870x2 is much better.

Power consumption wise, the 4870x2 used 110W~ more than the 9800gx2 at load.

Basically, if you play at 1680x1050 or lower, the 9800gx2 is clearly better.

If you play at higher resolutions, the 4870x2 WILL give you much better performance, but it will cost you a lot more too ;)

Two very good cards, depending on your resolution/budget.

And when new games come 9800GX2 will suffer. It's not just what's now. In newer games 4870X2 is probably going to be a lot better in lower resolutions too. Besides, when you say that "if you play at 1680 or lower, the 9800GX2 is clearly better" you are wrong. You just posted benchmarks which proove that 4870X2 beats 9800GX2 in each game at 1680x1050, except for Crysis, and your still saying that 9800GX2 is "clearly better".

Also i according to some benchies on xtremesystems forums, 4870X2 is capable of running crysis @ 36FPS average with very high settings and 4xAA. Now try that on your 9800GX2 and report back, whats your framerate.

no need to get hostile.. I was just basing it on how in canada, (i dont know what the prices are in your country) the 9800gx2 is 290 dollars, and the cheapest price i can find here is $609 for the 4870x2. When the performance is within 10%, and the cost is LESS THAN HALF, how can you with a straight face tell me that the 9800gx2 ISNT better?

4870X2 is faster. That's why i can say 9800GX2 isn't better. Seems logical, doesn't it? But if you were talking about what's better buy, i'd still take 4870 over 9800GX2 anytime.

I see what you are saying, and I can respect that. But IMO, most people wouldnt spend 300 dollars more for such a small increase.

It doesn't seem logical. As NoName has been saying, it's completely stupid to waste an additional $200 on something that you won't utilize. I doubt the original poster has a monitor with a resolution higher than 1650x1080, therefore it'd be illogical for him to even consider purchasing the 4870x2.

Given how well the HD 4870X2 scales with AA and at high-resolution, it's plain to see that it's going to last a lot longer. For an example of this, just look at X1900XT verses the 7800GTX. The X1900XT still plays today's games great (even Crysis, for how old it is), but the 7800GTX can't do nearly as well. Yes, the HD 4870X2 costs more, but you won't have to upgrade as soon as you will with the 9800GX2.

of course nvidias cards do crysis better cos its was practically made for it, and the funny thing is on the highest settings the 280 gtx is on par if not a bit behond the 4870x2 but ATI has admitted that the release drivers are terrible so the next release should just be unbelievable. That said i would be happy with either, im just lucky enough to have the money (just) to get a 4870x2

With 8.8 beta drivers 4870X2 is already ahead of GTX280 in Crysis.

I'd get one 4870 and save the rest for a new card when that starts getting a little long in the tooth. Seems strange to spend 200 extra dollars unless you are a insanely hardcore pc gamer.
