Valve was hosting a free weekend for Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, so I decided to give it a try. A few impressions:

1. Matchmaking takes a little longer than I would like. It is certainly slower than simply double-clicking on a traditional server and joining it.

2. The game runs fine, but every two to three minutes, I would get a terrible lag spike (and I am playing on a 20 megabit connection here at the university, so I know it is nothing on my end).

3. Gameplay-wise, it is very fast-paced, run and gun style shooter. Slower than Unreal Tournament, about as fast as Counter-Strike, but still slower than say, Battlefield: Bad Company 2. In comparison with games like CS and BFBC2, I found it more easy than usual to rack up kills in MW2. Or, perhaps I was simply having a lucky day today...

Overall, this game is not worth purchasing at its current price point... save your monies, stick with Counter-Strike Source, or buy some newer multiplayer games like BFBC2!

I have to say that the lag spikes are depending on other users. If you are lucky you get none, if not....you get lag. The rest of the point are 100% correct though.

Finally got it running after having to re-download and install it 3 times last night. There's no way I could play this after seeing BC2.

They also exist in BC2. Cheaters are everywhere.

I think you can get more enjoyment out of combat arms, and not even pay anything.

Yeah, i realise that, but people say that there's a cheat in nearly every server they go in when playing MW2.

I haven't come across any cheaters so far.. the multiplayer is solid, nothing too impressive. I overall like it, but it doesn't make me want to buy it

I was about to fall asleep the first round. It's horribly boring.

It was very good of them to put this up for a free weekend so we can see what we're missing.... Nothing.

Back to BC2 for me. :D

MW2 is a lot more fast-paced than BC2... there's hardly any travel time in the maps, and everyone dies in a few hits. Anyway, I found the multiplayer to be quite addictive... people can list MW2's problems, but at the end of the day its a very fun game. I don't play it much now since I have BC2, but I don't regret spending money on the game.

I agree. But then again, there is CSS and the gungame mod, which is comparable to what MW2 offers.

You either haven't played BC 2 enough or you didn't play on hardcore servers, the hardcore mode it's where it shines, just like CoD 4 used to.

Compared to BC 2 MW 2 feels like you're disabled.

I tried it as well. So far I think it is actually pretty fun. Of course I've only played about two hours so far. :P The only thing that I kind of don't like, is that it feels like it goes to fast. Like people run around like headless chickens. I know there are faster games out there, but something about it feels weird to me this time around. I don't think I will be plopping down $50 on this. Although from hearing people on these forums, maybe I should plop it down on Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

But at least BC2 has punkbuster and admins for insta bans. I've been playing mp fps for a long time and MW2 has the most cheaters by far. Alot of cheaters are wall hacks so they're harder to notice.

Theirs a lot of hate towards IW/Activision so a lot of people cheat just to prove what a failure of a system matchmaking is.

Look at my stats sig... I think I've played enough. I play hardcore BC2 on occasion, but I don't really care for it. It's a sniper's playground, since the bolt action rifles will kill in one shot anywhere, and the game has terrible cover and too many open areas. Hardcore or regular core game mode, it's still slower paced than MW2.

1. Huge spikes of lag, I got literally like a second or two of latency at one point.

2. Host transfer USUALLY fails

3. campers... everywhere.

4. Glitchy, I am Level 70 for no reason at all... It sorta just happened

5. Maps feel significantly less crowded than CoD4- in a bad way.

6. Hackers, I saw a couple.

I enjoyed my stay in mw2, it's a good game to jump into if you have 30 minutes to spare because you can count on the game only lasting 10 minutes. That's what I remember it being good for, just a game I can rebound to just to kill some time.
