I am considering buying world of warcraft and i have a question. Should i just buy the normal world of warcraft witthout any expansions for now to see if i like it, how much of a difference do the expansions make? Also when you first install wow how long do the patches take and also how big are they?

Im not a WOW expert but have played some. Id say just go for the first one if your short on cash. It can take you as far as lvl60. But I think you can find the BC and WOW in a bundle somewhere really cheap. Like 20$.

If you just have original wow not bc or wotlk can you interact with players with the expansions?, if so can you see the gear they wear even if its from an expansion?

you can interact with them just fine. This latest patch doesn't even have any content for beginners. you'll be fine with just the basic game for now.

If you don't have the expansions, you won't be able to train in the new professions, create a Dranei or Blood Elf character, or go to the new zones. I'm also pretty sure that you can't wear any of the gear from the expansions, either.

get the battlechest for WoW and BC. You won't need WotLK until you get a level 55 char and create a death knight. All of the other stuff, achievements, new professions, etc, were patched into the game before WotLK even was released. Pretty much, the only thing WotLK adds to your WoW account is the ability to create a Death Knight and going to Northrend. But you're not going to want to go to Northrend until about 70 anyway, so no point for a newcomer to WoW to get WotLK right away.

As for Burning Crusade, it allows you to create Blood Elves and Draenei, so I think it's more essential for a new player. But since you can get the battlechest that comes with the original plus BC for cheap, just get that. Worry about WotLK later if money is an issue.

You can. When Wrath released there was a guy who hadn't got Wrath yet and was wearing level 70 Wrath gear.

I don't know how often they update the disks, but when I last installed WoW there were about 2 gigs worth of patches. How long it takes will depend on the speed of your connection, the installation of the patches doesn't take that long.

And since none of that matters till you reach 60 anyway, it doesn't really affect him..
